Euro Pre muffler/cat converter
How do I tell if my car has a Euro Premuffler, or if it has had a Cat added without taking it off of the car?. I assume it has the Euro pre muffler sice I don't have a typical cat smell to the exhaust, but a cat could have been added when it was federalized.

Pull off the left rear tire. The stock cat is likely quite old looking and has a heat shield underneath it. Many of the euro premuff's are also stainless steel, which is a dead giveaway. I have also seen the euro premuff that came on a euro car but it looks quite different than a stock cat for a US car. A picture would be worth, well in this case, one word.

A stock cat (at least for USA) has a bung for an O2 sensor, premuf does not. Premuf has a sqaured-off end whereas cat typically is bullet shaped at each end. Again.. a pic will tell for sure.

Be careful...some euro pre-mufflers have the O2 sensor bung. My Dansk pre-muffler does have the O2 bung.

I have a Euro pre-muff on my SC and it's smaller and more "round" than the cat. It also weighs less. The cat also has mounting points for the heat shield whereas the pre-muff doesn't.

I'll go out and take pic in a minute to post. My car was originally a Euro car so if it has a Euro premuffler it will be pretty old looking (which it is). Also, since I have a Euro 81, I have no oxygen sensor, that was a US only addition in 81. I'll post in a few with the pic.

OK, here she is:
I'm leaning towards that being a Euro premuffler. It doesn't look like a cat to me. But if it is, I want to switch to gain back that little bit of HP the cat is steeling from me!

Looks a lot like a stock euro but it has a heat shield. Strange. Inclination is to say euro premuff but heat shield...?????

Why thank you! She sure has a loud screem at around 5k - 7k!
That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure, and I knew many people around here would know.

Look closely..very closely...and you will likely find a longish part number. Find that and we can say "for sure" what it is...

I did see that number when jacking the car up. I will check tomorrow and post again as it is getting late for me here.

Casey,
Did you ever figure out for sure if it was a euro premuff or Cat? I have an 81 SC (euro) as well and have what looks to be the same unit.

It doesn't look like my Euro pre-muffler and it's got a heat shield of some kind. I think it might be an early cat there...

Actually, I've searched Pelican's catalogue and this is the closest I can find to what my pre-muffler looks like. Only, mine's not shiny...

Aren't those aftermarket euro premufflers though? My car is a ROW car from 81 which should not have a cat to begin with right. Unless it was added when it was federalized.
I don't know why a euro premuffler would have a heat shield though.

I took a closer look at this thing. I found this inscription on the heat shield very hard to see.
KRAFT Katalysator (Made in the USA) Must have been added when federalized. Anyone have any idea what this might be?
