how long should the early sport muffler output pipes be??
The note by Jeffrey Gamble suggests a 6 inch length for the output pipes on a sport muffler conversion from a stock muffler; is this 6 inch length the best length for a 2.0L engine? Just curious if anyone knows what's best, or tried different options. I just made one and it's darn loud!...

love your car
I want to see more of it. See this thread for info on the sport muffler that cegerer installed and modified for his car. Could you please post a pic of you car (or email it to me) I love the racing stripe.
Shawn.

I've always assumed the long pipes were designed that way to optimize performance. Why else would they be that long, right?? But I noticed no difference when I cut mine down. Mine are basically cut off even with the bumperettes (about 6.75 inches, actually). -- Curt

Yours are about right. Stock they are so long I'm concerned somebody would hit them.

The aftermarket sport mufflers generally come with fairly long pipes -- some feel too long. I have seen versions with 10" - 14" ... and undoubtably, longer pipes help bottom-end torque a bit on smaller engines.

Warren, I figured the longer pipes would benefit a smaller displacement engine. I agree with John that I'd be afraid I would skin my shins on it every time I walked around it!!!
Unfortunately, one of the pipes is not perfectly aligned like on John's, so it looks better with the short pipes too as the misalignment is less pronounced. Maybe I'll make a baffle in the outlet pipe to get the same effect as a longer pipe - that should do the trick, I'd think. Does everyone agree?? |
