Embarassing Porsche Moment #37 .....

I'm sure everybody's been pulled over by the police once or twice ...... but have you ever been pulled over in your Porsche for speeding by police on bikes? Yeah, that's right. Mountain bikes - as in, PEDAL bikes ....... I was on a deserted dead end stretch of road behind a strip mall and decided to give it about 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear. Of course, with the strip mall on one side and heavy woods on the other and a sport muffler, it basically sounded like a nuclear-powered coffee grinder ....... ought-oh, what's this up ahead? A couple of bikers. Better slow down. Hmmmm, why are they blocking the road? And more importantly, why do they both have sidearms??????? This can't be good .......

So, they proceed to tell me how this is a bad place to speed because there're are kids, and walkers, and bikers, etc. who use this road, blah, blah, blah ....... yeah, right ...... but no sooner do they say this when 4 PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS roll out onto the road from between the trees!!! Even the cops had to keep from smiling. Luckily, no tickets were issued because they didn't have radar and the cops even complimented me on the car and recommended I do my speed runs on the "backroads" ....... -- Curt

I almost did, but outran them. I was in the back of the mall parking lot and floored it in first, brought the RPMs up and it got real loud (I have an exhaust leak at the crossover pipe so the car sounds cammed too). Anyway, I see the mall cops start pedaling fast toward me with their sirens blazing and I just decided to take off since there was an exit near me.

I've been pulled over by a motor cop while riding a bike. Does that count? Got a ticket too. Running a stop sign. Seriously.

We were pulled over in a Sierra Cosworth in 1991 in Central London, for having 7 people on board, by two London Policemen, ON FOOT.

They take that kind of stuff seriously over there.

During rush hour in big cities, bicycle cops can clean up writing tickets. Ask me how I know.

LOL Zeke. When I was in college (in the bicycle town of Davis) I was biking home from a football game and got pulled over by a police cruiser.

I was doing 30 in a 25. Just a warning, though, after he asked me who won the game.

I know two people who got DUIs, while riding (drunk) on bicycles.
A shame too, because in both cases they knew they drank too much at a party so borrowed the host's bicycle to get home with.

They were treated by the courts like any other DUI

...ever taken off from a set of lights and said to your passenger "gee, what ever that is beside me is quick!" and then had the passenger say "Hmmm, of course it is, its a cop bike!"

Doh!

Suffice to say, said officer was not particulalrly impressed.

If you're walking drunk they nail you for public intoxication...

True story:

I live in town with big university and almost all students bike. One particulary wet night, my ex gf's friend was riding on a back of the bike (sitting on the luggage-carrier), being towed by my ex on the way to local club. Both were pretty intoxicated and their ride was anything but stable. While they rolled downhill on a straight part of road, a police car sneaked from the side and policeman sitting on the passenger seat opened his window and tried to get their attention. Being drunk and all, girls didn't notice anything but kept rolling downhill...

After few attempts, policeman shouted loud "hey, you!" ... that's when girl sitting on the luggage-carrier snapped up, turned around with irritated look on her face and shouted "no thanx, we're not interested!", thinking that it was some driver harrasing them.

There were many in the biking group, and crossing was approaching so policeman just shaked his head, closed the window and drove away...

I've got you all beat in terms of embarrasing police stories - well embarrasing for the police, anyway:

Late at night (2-3 am), lonely highway in northern Alberta (that's Canada). Me rolling along in the 90 mph range in my '73 V6'd euro Capri. Crest of a hill - RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted) with radar hanging out the window of the cruiser.

I have no detector (they were illegal here in those days) and I know I'm dead anyway, so I blast by without even lifting off the gas pedal. In passing the cruiser, I glance at the cop and something doesn't look quite right.

After a couple of kilometers (actually still miles in those days) with no cruiser on my tail - I get thinking about the strange sense I had about that cop. So I burn a 180 and head back to check it out, all the time thinking I must be insane.

When I pull up to the cruiser (at a sedate speed, btw) I can now clearly see that the cop has his head leaning against his inboard shoulder. Thinking the worst (maybe the guy's been shot or something) - I continue to approach the car at a slow roll.

Imagine my shock, as I pull up to the driver's window - the cop suddenly springs to life! Apparently the guy had fallen sleep...

I asked the cop how far it was to the next gas station and rolled on with a smile on my face.

Same thing here Zeke! Except I can top yours, mine was also for speeding, 35 in a 25 zone! It was when I was 15, the judge gave me a suspended sentance.

I too have heard of the 'DUI on a bicycle' stories, and the irony has never failed to amaze me...you'd loose your driver's license, and be unable to drive your car, but you could still ride your bicycle (drunk as a skunk) again, 'cause you don't need a license to begin with...hmm....what's wrong with that picture?
