lower pulley removal tricks

anyone know the correct procedure for removal of the lower crank pulley while motor is still in the car?

or how to lock the flywheel in place

1982 carrera

Well you could put the car in gear and put the emergency brake on...then put a wrench on the pulley nut. This should lock things in place.

I just did this actually with a buddy. We did a partial engine drop though with the car on jack stands. Lowered the motor 3 - 4 inches. Removed the engine sheet metal and engine mount bar assembly. Then used an impact wrench to break it loose. My e-brake wasn't holding but this did the trick.

Partial engine drop is pretty easy thing to do...procedure is detailed in Waynes book and in the archives.

Not sure how you would do this without pulling the rear mount assembly.

thanks chuck,

been trying the in gear , emergency thing for a day now. even made a special tool to slide in the hole on the pulley and lock against the block. put a wrench with a cheater on the nut and broke the steel rod i had locking the pulley. it is definitly locked in place. i guess my only alternative is to partially lower the motor as you suggested.
