Idiot light wiring help
Ok guys. I've searched the past topics and haven't found my answer and the wiring diagram I have isn't helping so....
I'm trying to wire up some large idiot lights for oil pressure and for oil temp. 1) What's the best way to wire up a temp sender for a warning light? The stock sender is for the gauge only and isn't an on/off switch at a set temp to work a warning light. 2) For the oil pressure warning light: a) what color is the wire that should work the stock idiot light on the VDO combo gauge? I need to find it in the wiring mess under my dash. b) Whare is the switch/sender for that light? I have a single pole pressure sender for the gauge. Where is the light switch? THANKS! JP |

Sorry-
'66 2.0L motor and '68 chassis I have Wayne's 2 books and Bruce Anderson's book as well as the fairly useless Clymer and Haynes shop manuals. Need to get a set of factory manuals... Last edited by jplavanjr; 08-25-2003 at 07:00 AM.. |

Update
Update-
I just ordered a double pole oil pressure sender in the hope that one pole will be a switch for the warning light and the other pole will work the 0-150psi gauge. Is that correct? At what pressure should the warning light switch activate? I still have the question of the best way to create an oil temp warning light system. The normal temp sender is just a single pole unit to work the gauge. How can I retain that functionality while adding a warning light switch? Is there a double pole sender for this too? Thanks! JP |

The switch for the idiot light is on top of the engine behind the air box near the breather hose connection. I found that the switch for the idiote light is just a ground when it is closed (idiot light on with ignition) As soon as pressure developes, it opens (idiot light off) You don't need to get into the wire maze inside the dash; you can run an ignition-controlled-12 volt-wire to the bigger light you want to install, and from the light get a ground-wire to your existing switch on top of the engine and double up on the single spade connection. It's fairly easy. That way you still have the standard idiot light in the dash. As for temp. warning, there are different opinions. It would be desirable to have more than one sensor on the engine or oil circulation. Someone else chime in. Cheers.

For an extra oil pressure light you can use a piggy-back spade lug on the feed connection to the regular oil light. You will have to run a ground from the other side of the large light. I have a very large one in my daughter's 914 and also in my race car and both are great to have. Summit Racing sells a temp alarm system you can tap into any of the oil lines and set to what ever you like. I found the temp was a fairly slow changer compared to pressure so I never have used one.

I've got the pressure light figured out. It's the temp light switch I'm still wondering about. How'd you do that?

JP, you can try this. There are other ones though.
BTW, Why do you need another Light? Is it to hard to check your gaauge going down the straightaways?http://www.longacreracing.com/catalog/item.asp?id=374&catid=11
