we just see the normal racers at the light...no matter who they always want to race away from you. and it seems as though the people behind you like to get a good look into the rear window as they appear to be .5 inches from the back bumper, and when you look in the mirror they seem to be smirking like go ahead say something and i will run this rig over your nice back end. jerks exist so we can get neck exercises shaking our heads.

i drive like a tit on uk roads, taking advantage of gaps, late braking, dirty great wheelspins etc. i dont get any agro, in fact i get encouraged by other drivers far more than i get abuse from them. mind you, when i do get abuse its usually because ive been driving like a cock.

People in the midwest, PNW and the Netherlands related no -- or reduced -- problems. I dunno aobut the midwest, but I'm sure the generally laid back (and often stoned) attitude in the latter two places reduces the tension.

Now, how aobut the Deep South?

I am on the borderline between the Midwest and Deep South living in Memphis, TN. Most people admire Porsches with awe. I see maybe 8-10 Porsches per month. I've never received hateful gestures or rudeness in 12 years of driving, and if I did it wasn't enough for me to notice. In fact, I would say 99 times out of 100 the SC gets attention it is in the form of admiring glances and thumbs up. Who cares about the other 1%?

My parents have been landlords for almost 25 years. They regularly rent to transplants from other parts of the country. Almost always, the tenants are surprised at the how friendly Southerners are. I don't understand, but then I've lived here my entire life.

I think worrying about this stuff is just going to raise your blood pressure. Some people are just strange, and it does no good trying to understand them.

targa911man, the Assman Seinfeld episode was hilarious.

Just my opinion,
Jürgen

I haven't had any issues driving the 911 around here. I get alot more courtesy and respect driving the 911 than the CRX. Maybe because here there are many Porsches in the hood, and the majority of CRX drivers are young and ricers...which I am neither.

I am glad to here some of these stories because I have had similar experiences. Not driving the Porsche just in Hondas and VWs. Most everyone like my car and some ask if it is for sale. I think that nasty driving creats more nasty driving so you must judge your distances and not create problems.

I have noticed that east coast drivers seem to be more out of control, talegate more and are just in a general hurry for no reason. I was working in the D.C. area commuting ( I usually took the train) and saw so many drivers trying to go 80 when everyone was doing 60. I think the new cars are the problem they are quiet and have enough power to go 80 but don't handle or stop. Most people drive like they walk trying to talk on the phone or eat and not really looking. Very dangerous especially when they can't stop.

I am now in Ohio and there is much less anexity and obssesive behavior. I say look at the scenery slow down and get good mileage.

Hey U were hated LONG BEFORE U ever started driving a Porsche...even your dog hates you...so don't blame it on driving a Porsche!

dmac,

No road rage in Minnesota? Read on.

So, I'm driving home one night last summer around 8:30pm. For those of you in MN i was heading south on 101 between hwy 5 and 212. I come up behind a red S10 Blazer emblazoned with Artic Cat stickers and the like. He is travelling about 35 mph in the 50 mph zone. As I was on about the only straight section of the road and there was no oncoming traffic I passed him. I was in a passing zone. End of story right? Wrong.

At the next stop sign he comes up behind me, very close, and turns on his high beams. My turn at the stop sign so off I go. Through the twisties and down the hill to the 212 stoplight. I'm behind two other cars. He comes up behind me again, this time even closer, nearly touching my bumper pads, again with his high beams on. The light turned green and we all turned left. Then the dumb*** passed me on the gravel shoulder and swerved at me forcing me over into the next lane. Not wanting to encourage the situation I just slowed and got in behind him. The whole way into Shakopee the guy was doing 25 mph and slamming on his brakes repeatedly. Through Shakopee he wouldn't let me pass and continued doing 20-25 mph. Not once did I honk, flash brights or anything. Finally on the outskirts of Shakopee I had an opportunity to pass and blew by him in the left lane and kept going hard. Never saw him again.

I'm not sure what I did to provoke him but oh well.

When experiencing road rage from a red neck (Blazer w/Arctic Cat stickers qualifies) you might think about turning off to avoid the guy. You never know what might tip them over the edge!

n8marx 08-27-2003 02:18 PM

dmac,

Agreed. At the time I was in denial that the whole thing was actually happening. Come on, who could possibly be this stupid? It was also my first experience with the "red-neck-run-the-fancy-car-off-the-road" crowd. Next time I'll take the first opportunity to escape the situation. Warm, not too humid summer nights are too precious around here to let a d*ck like this guy wreck 'em.

See you around.

I have this fantasy of hollowing out the rear bumperettes, putting remote control hatches on the bottom of them and filling them with home-made "Jacks" .... welded from nice 8D common nails....a bend here a weld there.

Get in front of the Jack-hole and release.....buh bye.

I don't think its your driving, or that they are jealous of your car; people in Los Angeles tend to have a much shorter fuse while driving. Traffic is generally pretty bad 7 days a week 19 hours a day.

newman 911 08-28-2003 05:17 AM

I have been driving my 77 911s (red) And people have been yelling, honking, etc and I finally figured it out, my brake light was not working!!!!!!! I adjusted it and it works great, now it seems likes everyone wants to race!!!!!! Chris

Sonic dB 08-28-2003 07:03 PM

Update: Got a nice compliment today, while driving down PCH.

A guy in a new Silver BMW 3-Series pulled along side of me and yelled something. I rolled down the passenger window some more and he goes "How old?....what year is it?"

"86!" I said...

He gave me a big "Thumbs up" and a smile. I said "Thanks" and waved back.

Im driving a classic. SmileWavy

Geeez, where do all you guys live? I'm suprised you don't have machine guns and rocket launchers in the fenders, aka 007. I'm in Charlotte, NC. We have some horrible drivers, as does the rest of the world, but I've never experienced any type of the craziness 'ya'll' describe!!! I did encounter a chicken fight with a pickup drivin' redneck before but he was swatting bees from a nest in his glovebox. LOL!!! Most people around here are fairly calm.

Come to the south and escape the madness!! Don't get me wrong, like all other cities, we have 8 lanes of he77 in all directions but a drive to the shore or the beautiful blue ridge mountains are a driving experience to be cherished, especially in a P car.

Icemaster 08-31-2003 01:10 PM

Funny thing. I have the same type of reactions from folks when I'm driving my '97 Grand Cherokee. Started about the time I bought my first SUV back in '95 and got out of the econobox (needed something to pull the trailer...)

You get used to it. Either that or it's time for a Hummer with the rocket launcher attachment.

I was out in the country and came onto a one way at a time bridge. A big four wheel drive coming the other way was meant to stop and wait but didn't so we got out and had an argument in the middle of the bridge. The logging truck driver sort of guy was getting quite agro so I yelled out to my girlfriend "Get the gun out of the glove box, I'm gonna blow this c***t's head off". LOL, that got rid of him. Shouldn't have had the argument I know but I HATE that sort of person.

GSpreeman 08-31-2003 02:46 PM

The Porsche broke down so I had to take my four wheeler to take my cousin, actually, at this point my wife to the OBGYN. Came up to this narrow bridge...now, wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Douglas 08-31-2003 03:22 PM
