15" fuchs on SC?
I am considering 15" fuchs for my 79SC. How much of a performance improvement can I expect? There should be no problems with clearance? I am curious how others have liked switching to 15" fuchs?
Thanks, Keagy |

What are you switching from? What widths? What size & brand of tires? I think the 79SC came with 15x6 front & 15x7 rear unless someting else was special ordered. There should be no clerance issues. If your going down from a 16 or 17 to a 15 there is a lot less selection in performance tire sizing. From what I gather alot of peple go up in size rather than down. Fuchs are the best tire for your car.I would suggest at least 7" on the front & 8" on the rears. Just my nickels worth.

Paul,
I current have 7 & 8 16" wheels. My understanding is that you can achieve some performance improvement by switching to 15" wheels. Any opinions? Keagy |

You get a slighly lower tyre diameter and thus a slighly lower gearing - acceleration is a little better, top speed little worse.
Cheers - Ryan this link is to a tyre/gearing calculator: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

. . ..And you may benifit from a lower CG (Center of Gravity)
(taking a 1/2" off the radius will lower the car by 1/2")

You lose some weight with the 15-inchers, if (I think) eight pounds is that important.

I heard 6 pounds, per front wheel, but that's also unsprung weight, the worst kind!

I am selling an extra set of 7 & 8 x 15's to a friend with an SC. He is going to mount Hoosiers on them for autocrossing, for the reasons mentioned. Quicker acceleration, lower CG, less weight. How big of a difference? We'll see, but the autocrossing competition here is pretty fierce, so every tiny bit helps.
