Question Price Guidance - 1987 Carrera Targa

Whatever help you guys can provide would be appreciated. Looking at an '87 Carrera Targa. 125k miles, excellent condition (owner's opinion, not P-Car knowledgeable). Needs nothing (also owner's opinion). Does not drip oil, targa top does not leak. No service/maintenance records (S/M done by a friend of the family per recommended service intervals, but no receipts or records). Pending nothing of significance found in the PPI, good test drive, nice paint and no visible oil leaks, thoughts on appropriate price? Also, been with one or another member of the same family since new and BBS wheels.

Thanks,
Tom

Just from my own experience shopping for a pcar there isn't one out there that doesn't need anything. I had the same experience a couple times where owners said "I just change the oil and she runs great." I ask when the last valve job was and get a funny stare. There are alot of pcar owners that don't have a clue. I would make sure you really trust the shop that is doing the PPI on this one.

As for the price I would say between 15k and 18k depending on the condition and what the PPI finds.

Some recent ebay sales (?). For what it is worth . . .

1987 Targa 81,453 $15,600 Black Tail
1987 Targa 93,000 $14,600 Red Tail
1987 Targa 58,495 $11,300 Odometer change Red
1987 Targa 78,588 $18,101 Black
1987 Targa 61,547 $13,000 Red Tail
1987 Targa 59,900 $20,500 Red
1987 Targa 109,150 $14,650 Black
1987 Targa 94,500 $15,700 Black

I have been tracking 1980 - 1991 ebay sales since Feb as a buildup to a purchase in future as budget allows. Mileage is usually indicative of condition - any issues are noted.

If anybody wants the excel file (over 250 sales (?)) just mail me . . .

Tom,

Depends on many factors, but since you asked . . . I'd say if it's clean (int/ext/eng/trans) and gets a good PPI with leak down, a "stock" 87 Targa with 125k miles and good maintenance history (documented and with all the expected replacements for a car with 125k miles already done) is worth $13-15K. Without maintenance records knock off $1-2K (sorry I think it's important). Also I think the BBS wheels lower the value even more.

Mileage is not necessarily the key factor (these engines can run quite a long time with the right care and maintenance), but for a car with 100k+ miles, I'd look the other way if the owner can not provide some records of at least the major services.

BTW, If it was a coupe with OEM wheels I'd add $1-2K, also I'm not sure any of these numbers apply to CA or FL (seems there are tons of 911s in these places and the values appear to reflect the greater supply).

P.S. Ian you have a PM

There should be enough good P cars out there where the driver has records and knows the background. I would stay away unless you are really hooked but follow up with a good PPI. If the owner is clueless, they probably have not taken car of oil consumption that can be real costly. Good luck, post pic's if you can

Thanks for the feedback so far, guys. Seems pretty much in line with my thoughts to far.

Ian: Are those eBay sales you are tracking "completed", where the reserve was met and all?

Thanks again,
Tom

Yes, they are only completed sales with reserve met. Although, as we all know, some ebay sales fall through & I have seen the same car sold several times. I also ignor slant noses, new motor cars & any with substantial body conversions.

I paid 15.5 for mine in 2001. 179K, cosmetically good, mechanically great, documented service history for last 10 years, all upgrades done (G50...etc.).

The PO used the car as his daily driver as well as for AX so it was driven hard but well cared for. I also use it as my daily driver so the cosmetic flaws don't really bother me much, although I'd like to refinish the wheels and Targa bar...

Would eBay prices tend to reflect the lower end of the range? I'm just thinking that the average bidder (though not all) is out of town, and would not pay as much for a car that he/she cannot inspect in person. I wouldn't even consider buying a car sight unseen.
