Oil line leaking

1. Oil Leak help:

There are two oil lines directly above the drain plug on the oil tank ('70 911). Can you picture these? They look identical and are positioned one above the other. I don't know the name of these oil lines but....

After (and probably during) every run, I see a steady drip coming off of my oil tank. I thought my drain plug was leaking but further inpection revealed it was coming off the bottom oil line and running down the oil tank and dripping from the plug area. I tried to tighten this line but its already very tight.

Is teflon tape a N0-N0? I was thinking of draining the tank, removing the line and wrapping the threads with some tape.

Ideas on how to fix it? Cost? Effort? Etc?


2. What is the appropriate oil capacity? 6 qts? 8 qts?

BTW: My wife thinks the car is a 'piece' because it drips oil.

Good question, I just noticed mine is doing that, too. Weird because the car definitely didn't leak even a drop of oil when I bought it two months ago, this is something new.

I was just about to post a question as to how the hose attached down there, and if there was a O-ring that could be replaced or something...

The leak is probably coming from where the rubber part of the hose is crimped on to the metal part. You have to replace the whole oil line. This means unscrewing both lines from the thermostat which is where the fun starts. You will probably have to demel the oil line nut off the thermostat, hopefully without destroying the thread.

Thermostat? Did a '70E have a thermostat? I didn't think they had oil coolers... I know mine doesn't.

My leak is definitely coming from the fitting where it joins the tank, not the hose, as there's no oil on the hose or the fitting itself.

As John says, the rubber hose junction is the far more likely leak to develop in an old hose. A newly installed hose is more inclined to be leaking at the fitting. It can be hard to tell the source because the oil migrates.

Teflon tape on the threads will do nothing for you. The threads are not part of the seal.

I would start by cleaning the area up with your favorite degreaser. Once clean it will be easier to determine the true source of the leak.

If it truly is the fitting, remove it. Inspect and clean the sealing surface. If it is damaged (nicked), replace the hose. Reinstall and tighten. Monitor for leaks. Contnue tightening 1/16th turn at a time until the leaks subside.

Sometimes these need to be really tight.

What is this hose called? What do I look for when purchasing a replacement hose? ie "Oil return line" or something....

How much are they?
