It's been somewhere for 3 years, Suggestions?

Hi All

Sorry to be boring but I am still trying to sort out where my 911 has been all it's life, I now know most of it except for the first 3 years from 69-72 when it first appears registered with the DVLA.

I have talked to AFN Porsche UK but they can't help and I talked to the Early 911 Archiviste from the Porsche Club GB but he says his details will be limited and he couldn't give me any information unless I join the club!

Can anyone suggest any other ways I might find out where the car was for the 3 years?

Do they have Car Fax reports in the UK? Those will tell where the car was registered.

If the DVLA have no info pre 1972, it would suggest the car was imported from overseas. Do you have any idea what country the car is originally from?

Luke

I have no idea, I hoped that AFN could tell me but they couldn't.

I have had a DVLA history search done and I now know that it has spent all it's driving life in and around Glasgow, and I have a copy of the buff log book but it is registered as a 72 but I now know that it is a 69!

Any ideas on where to go next?

I am awaiting my Porsche Club GB membership at the moment, if you can wait a week or so (until I get my membership card etc) I'll ask them for you.

Is it LHD? If it's RHD the car will be either UK or South African.

Thanks for offering to help

if you're still none-the-wiser in a couple of weeks send me an e-mail (address is on my profile).

I suppose the obvious question is, are you definately sure it's a 69 car? Have you checked the chassis numbers out?

I purchased it as a 1972 2.4T but when I posted the cars numbers on here, I was told that it is really a 1969 2.0T, and now I have the history I know when the engine change to 2.4 happened.

To complicate matters it didn't come to me with the 2.4 or the original 2.0, instead it came with a 2.0 in boxes with parts missing, this isn't really a problem as I think it will have a 2.7 when I finish restoration (have to start first!)

Darryl, as Luke mentioned above, it could have spent the first three years of its life abroad - not necessarily in SA - it could have been delivered to a member of the 'forces' stationed overseas who eventually planned to bring it back to the UK, hence RHD.

Back in those days, when a car was imported into the UK, it was issued with the current year's registration suffix letter, not given an age-related plate as happens now.

One way to (possibly) find out is to get the car's original Specification Sheet from Porsche Cars GB (Certificate of Authenticity in the US) which will give you details of date of manufacture, engine & transmission numbers, exterior & interior colours, options supplied, original selling dealer, etc. but it will cost you a not insignificant amount for this info (I think it's around £75 now!!) & they can sometimes make mistakes...

However, I suppose that it could have been ordered through a UK Dealer & then personally exported in which case it might not be apparent from the Spec Sheet.

Have you tried writing to the previous owners (enclosing a SAE) on the off-chance that someone may still be living at their same address ?

HI Andy

Thanks for the advice, I have written to all the former keepers and even the keepers of vehicles who's registration numbers were transferred to the 911. But no joy as yet, 1 reply from Royal Mail to say the addressee has gone away and an e-mail from an address I wrote to where a former keeper lived in the 70's.
