Early 911 Seat Refurbishing

Hi Guys,

After 2 years of searching I’ve resigned myself to the fact I’m not going to find any tan coloured early sports seats for my 72 911, they simply do not exist. As such one of my “jobs for the winter” is going to be refurbishing my existing low back seats. The vinyl itself is in pretty good condition but the seat frames are looking pretty shabby and need refurbishing.

My seat frames are currently finished in black and I’d like to keep it that way. Does anyone know if this is a powder coat or just paint? If it is a paint finish would I be better off powder coating the frames to give a more durable finish?

Cheers

To answer your question, I just painted mine when I recovered them. Had to add new padding also. That rubberized horsehair can get pretty ragged. But why don't you just buy some sport seats and then recover them in the color you want? Wprld Upholstry has recover kits in all sorts of colors for both type of seats in either vinyl or leather. Good luck.

The better, lighter, and less smelly seats from a tan SC can be fit to your car. Tan is much more common in the later years. YOu can also pay for a really nice leather refit -- I'd let a pro do that.

I'm unloading my 1974 stock seats for $60.00. They're red, if you want to go red, and in fairly good shape. And if you're not period-correct conscious, I'm sure they can be recovered in whatever color you want.

And you're going to ship a pair of $30 seats to England? My, what extravagance

Thanks for the info guys:

Jstobo: Why don't I just buy some sport seats and recover them? Becuse in the UK an ok condition black pair will cost circa £1800 (if I can find them), a lot of money for something that then needs recovering

Randy/dd74: What to SC seats look like? I'd like to keep the car "in period" but the cost savings are apparent with SC seats!

Luke,

You can get them for less than £1800. I bought a pair of early sport seats in black vinyl on factory lightweight tipping frames for 1200.

Peter Andrews at Transend found me mine. He had another pair available a week before i got mine, which were promptly snapped up before i could get em. I suggest you have a word with him and ask him to keep an eye out for you.

The patience will pay off. I love mine.

Doog,

I spoke to Transend last week. 1 pair in balck cord, one pair cream leather, 1800 and 2k respectively. Market forces are at work!

Best of luck anyway.
