What do you tell people when they ask how much your car "set you back"?
 

Do I burst their bubble and tell them SC's like my are going for low teens? Do I lie and say a kabillion dollars just to perpetuate the mystique (ignorance)? or tell them nonyabidness?

I tell them the truth, then I'll bore them for hours with all the details of all the restoration & maintanance I've done over the last 3 months. ;)

5K and hard work. That really opens their eyes.

After that unless they are a Pelican or fellow enthusiast I don't see that its any of their business.

I get asked that "ALL" of the time. Even when I don't have the car with me. For example when I had my distributor rebuilt and was picking it up, the guy at the counter wanted to know how much my car was worth.

After all of my hard work, the car is "PRICELESS"....until the day I decide to sell, which is hopefully, never.....I'll worry about giving out a number then!

I usually say I paid 11K for it in 1991 and that was under the market value at that time. Since then I have put in another 10K and I am well on my way to putting another 5~10K into it. Is it worth that much? Only to me, but I don't care I have no plans on selling it. It is not the money that counts it is the pride in ownership. If I didn't care about the car I would't be doing a restoration.

Usually I just say "I'll let you know when I'm done being set back"

less than 20K, they are usually in disbelief at that point, then I laugh as they drive off in their $35K crap

I had a guy at a traffic light ask me "how rich do you have to be to own that" when I was driving my 550 Spyder replica (he obviously didn't know it was fake). I told him I didn't know, I stole it.

My thought is always "if people know how little they are then people in general might be more likely to buy them, which will put them in the hands of people who aren't prepared to maintain them properly." This phenomenon has lead to the demise of untold 944s, 924s, and 914s.

Usually I just look at their car, and if it looks like they bought it new I say, "less than you paid for that." Then I add that if it isn't properly maintained that an engine rebuild will cost me about as much. (which is only a bit of an exageration). The same people often ask what year it is, and when I tell them, they usually exclaim how great it looks (even though my paint is terrible).

This way I can dispel the idea that driving a porsche is like flashing a big wad of cash. It is more a display of dedication than riches.

Ain't nobody's business but my own and it's quite rude to ask in the first place. If somebody wants to share the information that's fine, otherwise I could care less. It's his or her money.

Out here in So Cal...Porsches and 911s are so common...that no one ever asks me that question.

Check that...actually I DID get that question asked finally just last week. The Mexican guy at the parking booth was asking me about my car:

"Hey mon...what kinda car is dat?"

"A Porsche 911"

"Cool mon. Its beautiful. How much you pay for dat?"

"About $20,000" (I inflated the price a little to impress him).

(surprised) "Wow mon....you can buy a new car for $20,000"

"Yeah...but it would be a plastic Piece of s---. These cars were made for quality and to last"

"Cool man. It must be nice to be young like you mon and to have a car like that"

I tell them the truth. It was free.

I tell people I can't afford to buy one. This car is just a bunch of parts put together from a few cars I drug home from the insurance auction.

People are more impressed to find out that I'm into my 944 track car about five grand. They see a full roll cage and think it takes the same budget as NASCAR.

I usually do a recap of market pricing for them - "Well, you can get a nice 87 - 89 911 like mine for $18- 22K - give or take depending on condition." That usually satisifies them and most people are amazed that you can get a beautiful used 911 in very good condition for about the price of a Honda Civic.

A fellow I work said that he wished he could buy a Porsche.
He has:
$18,000 fishing boat, $20,000 speed boat, dirt bike, four wheeler and a
newer Jeep Cherokee.
Obviously he doesn't want a Porsche.

Im asked that all the time. I just say "Well..... less than my Mercedes" and give'em a wink.
