steel tire-valve stems
My front wheels, particularly, are getting hot enough on the track, from braking, that the stickum holding on the little valve-stem supports (that keep the rubber stems from breaking off from centirfugal pressure) lets go.
It has been recommended that I go to chrome-steel valve stems instead. Can such stems be mounted from the outside of the wheel rim, or does each tire have to be dismounted? Stephan

Sorry Stephan I don’t understand your problem described in the first paragraph. Yes to change the stems the tires will have to be removed, then reinstalled and balanced

Go with motorcycle shortie steel stems. Yes you will have to pull the tire from the wheel to replace them. Do not believe anyone who tells you the "sleeve" type steel stem-over rubber will suffice. Ya gotta have the steel from the inside out.
The shorties present less weight and thus less possibility of being thrown outward. You may also want to experiment with a stronger adhesive on the supports. Or you could drill the support and wheel...(ouch!). John

Chrome valve stems are rubber valve stems w/chrome metal over the outside. If you are using proper wheel weight glue on your stem supports you should not have any trouble w/them coming off. You will have to dismount the tire to add.

I highly recommend the cycle metal valve stems on all tires as John said.
Get rid of the rubber stems and supports. They will cause leaks and they really do not look that good. and Yes you do need to remount your tires and rebalance. It is worth it ! |

Good idea, using wheel-weight glue...what I used was the little rubber pads that come attached to the aluminum stem support. You pull off a piece of protective paper and stick the then-exposed adhesive side to the wheel. guess they're intended for cruising, not track...
But next time I change tires, I'm going to all-steel stems...and not the ones that are rubber inside a chrome-plated sleeve. Stephan
