Angry Wipers make a funny "SCREEEE" sound

I've noticed after a bit of a lay-up, the wipers in my '76 make a half-hearted "SCREEEEEE" noise when you first use them. It sounds like a goat being slaughtered. Switch the wipers off and it stops. It tends to go away after a while, but I'd really like to nip this one in the bud.

Any ideas? Perhaps it's a common 911 malady...

DO NOT exceed 60kmh. Drive directly to PCM for computer diagnosis and latte.

After the WRX, Alfa is the superior vehicle on the road. The only car that i want to drive is Alfa. 911s are nice, but slow and no airconditioning.
Alfa is the only car for me.

Um.. thanks, guys... I don't have room for any rusty, old Italian cars right now.

Anyone else? I'll try pulling the wiper motor and stripping it down...

Adam,

I don't know if this will solve your "screeee" problem, but here's a technique that I use to keep my wipers in good shape.

I remove the wiper arms from the wiper shafts. The arms are connected by a nut and a washer or two; there is also a plastic cap that lifts off the shaft.

With just the wiper shafts exposed, I turn the wipers on low (the shafts just turn back and forth). I then place several drops of oil (30 wt. engine oil or "3-in-1" household oil) on the rotating shaft where it sticks out of the body panel. The oil will work it's way down the shaft and lubricate the wiper shaft mechanism.

I have been doing this every year and I have no wiper noises.

Regards, Bruce

Adam,
Bruce has the right idea. If yours are too far gone (gunked up bearing surfaces) you may have to remove and clean.
As someone else said, if you try to clean in situ don't get any solvents on your painted surfaces..\

If this goes on too far, it will cause the motor to overcurrent and burn wires and blow fuses, JUST when you need the wipers of course...don't ask me how I know this...

Ahh! Thank you, Bruce! I'll give that a try over the weekend.

I've looked at the mechanism under the scuttle plate (from the trunk area) and I'd just as soon not pull it all to bits. This might work as a year-by-year thing.
