replacing antenna mast on 1980 sc

I recently bought a reposessed 180 sc. It had a snipped antenna. I bought the replacement mast that has the smooth nylon cord. When trying to reinstall I shoved the nylon cord as far as it would go then gave it power. All I get is a little clicking noice. Nothing grabs it to pull back into winding mechanism. Has anyone ever replaced one of these? Is my winding mechanism broke?

I don't know a dam thing about the power antenna, but I would think you would need to open it up to install the new antenna and cable to extend /retact it. The real reason I'm posting is to ask you some questions. I have an 80SC Targa and mine is the manual antenna on the drivers side. What do you have and where is it located? I have read that the power antenna must be installed on the passenger side since there is not enough room on the driver side.

You shouldn't have to open it up. It's supposed to be replaceable without taking anything apart, short of removing the top mounting nut from the antenna. I don't know for sure, but you may need the toothed style antenna mast. It depends on which Hirschmann antenna you have.

Pat, there's not enough room in the driver's side fender to mount an power antenna due to the fuel filler being there. As you've probably noticed, there's barely enough room for the manual antenna that's there. All power antennas are mounted on the passenger side.

Perhaps there are remnants of the original toothed nylon cord still inside the unit. Disassemble it and check it out. It's pretty easy to remove.

when i pulled the remnants of the snipped antenna it came out complete and was of the smooth variety. Looks like I'll take the unit off and mess with it. Thanks for the input.
