what exactly is a "pre-muffler"

My 86 has a cat bypass going into the stock muffler. I hear reference to a pre-mufflers. Is that something that was on other model years?

It is the euro pre-muffler that your hear about. It would replace your cat.

Before man invented the muffler, he invented the "pre-muffler".

Premuffler as in secondary muffler going inline but before your normal muffler. It's used in place of the cat to help keep things quiet but provide a straight through design for better flow.

Actually it's the thinkamajig or is it the watchamacallit before the muffler hence the term pre-muffler.

technical explanation

The pre-muffler is a device used to elminate back pressure to the muffler. Inside the pre-muffler, there is a vacumn discharge pressure switch that monitors the overall equilibrium state of the pressure within the entire muffler system. This adjustable switch, when dialed in just right, can create tremendous horsepower gains, up to 30hp on a 3.0 liter motor and 50+ hp on a 3.2 motor. When used in conjunction with SteveW’s chip, many members of this board have gained 80-100 hp with this combination. Several world renowned tuners and racing outfits in the early 70s used pre-mufflers to gain an advantage and win races. Eventually many racing circuits concluded that pre-mufflers provided an unfair advantage to some race cars and banned the use of pre-mufflers in races. Amidst all the controversy, pre-mufflers are now offered by several reputable Porsche tuners. I have been very happy with my pre-muffler and I highly recommend it to others.

John, you need to post way more than 3 times.... do you have a link to one of those reputable Porsche tuners? I was hoping to get an original pre-muffler to match my OEM tartan sports muffler. Right now I have the Darns't replica that's made in Brazil and while its a great pre-muffler, it isn't accepted in concours. TIA.
