need help finding good RS bumpers
I am building a 73 RS clone and am ready to buy the fiber glass bumpers. A couple of fellow 911 owners have been told that some brands fit well and others are a nightmare and require a lot of body shop hours for a proper fit. Can anyone with experience help me thru the maze. Thanks phil

Recently this was discussed. I'll save you the trouble. It boils down to M A Shaw or TRE. A search for Shaw will provide a link and TRE is on the BBS as "TRE Cup" One other with honorable mention was GT Racing, I believe in CO, if you are over that way.

For what it is worth a have a MA Shaw ducktail. It is pretty good. I do not have anything to compare it too but it seems like a quality piece.

Thanks zeke. I tried to do a search prior to the post but had no success, operator error.

Try Peter at Rennspeed. Ive heard great things about him and he also supplied the parts for Jacks BB11. It looks like good quality.

I bought the bumpers for mine from MA Shaw. Great quality and they needed very little prep work to fit/paint. Good luck!

I got my rear RS bumper from Pelican. It is a Getty Design. All the other mentioned above are high quality as well. Pelican had the best price. Very minor fitting involved.

Jack had better luck than I did. The RS rear bumper I purchased is so ill-fitting it will require major surgery to fit. It looks like good quality but the fit is .... not. He wasn't too forthcoming in offering a solution. NG in my book. One person's opinion, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
Actually, the RS rear bumper is the one Rennspeed piece I don't wholeheartedly recommend. Although BB1 had one of theirs that fit like a glove, I've heard of problems from Sherwood and others with that piece.
Peter once mentioned to me that he was thinking of starting from scratch on the piece, but I don't know if he's done it, yet. Everything else I've gotten from Rennspeed (and that includes all of BB2, pretty much), has been of very high quality. My body guy said the front fenders were the best he's ever seen. And as I said, my previous RS rear bumper had no issues that I ever discovered. Peter stands behind everything he sells, in my experience. But that's why I didn't jump in on this thread. |
Jack, is it Peters rear bumper on BB now or did you go another route?
|
It's Rennspeed. Everything on the car is Peter's, except the hood, and that's only because we found an extra-lightweight racing hood.
But my rear is an RSR bumper, which is slightly different than the RS model. (Although, again, BB1 had the Rennspeed RS rear bumper with no fit issues at all.) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1062023819.jpg |
I would avoid GT Racing fiberglass unless you get some kind of perverse pleasure modifying the parts to fit.

I have to jump back in here for a second. I was in the FG business back in the Dark Ages making some race car parts and some VDub stuff. I can tell you two things about fit. One is it's fiberglass, duh. If it is going to be perfect, it will have to be heavier than steel. The other is that many cars are no longer the same shape as the model car that the part was fitted to. So, your car is out of whack and the FG guy is the villian. I'm not promoting GT here. Never seen a GT part, but I have spoken to Hank. Kurt, give him a call and discuss the difficulty. I found him to be concerned with quality. Having been in the biz, I can read someone's thoughts about the subject, even on the phone.
BTW, I never made a chopper gun part in my life. I hope none of these guys do. I'd rather have steel. |
