'78 SC steering rack compatibility...?
Hi-
The steering rack on my '78 SC is worn enough to warrant a replacement. I ordered a used one from a salvage shop, but it appears different from mine. It has these #'s on the ZF tag: 7820900129, and below this, 69121. The salvage yard one does not have the same access covers that the one in my car has to grease the rack and pinion, etc. I'm guessing that it is from an older car. My question: will this bolt in and work fine, or do I need an exact replacement? Thanks for the help-b. |

It will bolt in and work fine. They are the same, essentially, for all 911's up to '89 and all year 914's.

Thanks for the answer. I guess I'll give it the go-ahead and hope for the best! BTW, i've seen tie rod removal tools (like a bearing puller device) and all i have is a fork to get them apart. Will these damage the Turbo tie rods already on the car?

Yes, the pickle fork will damage the tie-rod end. Best to use the little press tool if you plan to reuse it.
