Question 3.6 Turbo purchase advice wanted

Hello all,

I am looking at a 3.6 Turbo. The car seems to be in good shape - visually it looks to be a 9, the mileage is a bit higher at 70k, and at 58k, the engine was rebuilt by Porsche under warranty because a through bolt nut (whatever that is) came loose and damaged 3 cylenders. It also got a new clutch at the time.

Anyway, I've seen the paperwork from Porsche for the rebuild and it looks on the up & up. What do you all think of buying a car with that sort of work having been done to it and what sort of price should a car like that command?

TIA,

John

One of the things that keeps the value on 3.6Ts up is that they are rare. If the engine has been rebuilt and it has 70K miles on it i would think it would be worth quite a bit less than others I have seen. It will always have a tougher resale. Most of these are garage queens. i would think that if you could get it in the low $40s, it would be a good deal. I assume that the seller is asking more, but it is a soft (very soft) market right now for this type of car.

Good luck

Mark

That's a very desirable car.

Can you describe the damage and repair?

If the work was done by an authorized dealer and passes a thorough PPI I'd say the resale doesn't suffer that much.

Proof that the market is soft (very soft). I have seen a few 993TT's on ebay for the mid 50 range. Here is one with a buy it now just over $50K. I don't know anything about this car other than I would like to have it. Less miles than the one you are looking at:

I would think the re-build would not effect the re-sale all that much. I know a failure at 50K is not what someone wants, but a fresh motor would be very desirable in my eyes.

The owner says he has rejected bids of $50k. He is asking $56k.

If all inspections/test check out I'd meet in the middle....it'll be an offer that sticks in his head and he may just take. IMO, if you offer $50,500 he'll feel insulted and dismiss you as a potential purchaser....even if this is what he eventually takes 6 months from now.

If you do a little digging...

You will find that this seller is not very reputable. Ebay Feedback trail (follow it a bit) is BAD.

I'd LOVE to have a 933 TT, but not from this guy...

Wow, thanks for doing my research for me guys. I was going to send that TT seller a note. It did certainly seem a bit too much.

As for the 3.6, I'm going to chat with the owner this weekend.

My comments were directed towards the 3.6 single turbo....Is that the $56k car?

CBRacerX, How do you "follow the feedback trail"? When I click on his feedback, there are only 3 responds and all are good...

I tried to click on the link that maxnine11 left and it won't open.

This is the cheapest 993TT I have seen on ebay, and if the seller is not an honest guy, I would stay away from it...I guess my point is that the market is soft now and for the kind of money people want for a nice 94 3.6T, you can get a 993TT. I personally like the 993TT better, but I'm sure some would rather have the '94.

The 94 3.6T in great shape with low miles will get a high price...others will sit for sale for a while (IMO). I would guess because of so many turbos on the market right now, from 996 all the way down, the prices keep dropping. Good time to buy.

Rick, yes I took your comments as to the 3.6T. I think it sounds like a good idea. I just get my head turned by the 993TT, but my budget is basically max'd at $50k or so.

Ah...I figured it out. I clicked on the feedback of the people who gave this guy positive feedback and it looks like most of them are him...

It's great that this board is here to "watch your back".
