930 K27 upgrade...DIY project?

When I bought my 930 a couple of months ago, the PPI revealed an oil leak on the turbo. I was considering the k27 upgrade anyhow, so this was not too much of a concern. Now that I have been driving the car for a while, I think I would like to consider the upgrade. I have a couple of questions for you old pros:

1. Does it make any sense to replace only the turbo or do you need to take the plunge and do exhaust system as well? I know that the exhaust will make a difference in hp, but are all the benefits of the k27 unrealized without the exhaust upgrade as well?

2. Is the turbo upgrade a DIY project? If so, are there any good "how to" sources?

Thanks!

The exhaust gives more hp compares only changing the turbo, YES it does.
My opinion is that there's turbos that are much better then the KKK K27, I thinking to buy me a Garrett or maybe Holset turbo instead with better spoolup.

If you dont have the $$$ to buy the exhaust and the turbo, buy the turbo then you have some HP to get when the exhaust arrives.;)

If you can adj the valves then you most likely can R&R the turbo. I don't know of any How to sites. When you getting ready to do the upgrade ask here and you will get some help. Also you can do a search on this site. And yes you can do step by step upgrades. It is sometimes a labor saver to do some upgrade at the same time. Also more costly

Just did the k27 upgrade as well as euro heat exchanges. The exhaust is not a DIY project but the k27 upgrade is. Alone the k27 upgrade will be very noticeable. Good luck with it.

I cannot testify to the ease of installing the K27. But believe me, it is well worth it!
My fond memory... :D

Replacing the turbo is somewhat easy, access to the bolts is a problem but if you remove the rear valance it simplifies things. If I was to do this again I would drop the engine, replace the cams with SC cams. change the exhaust to your choice of aftermarket and the turbo. The cam change makes as much difference to performance as does the K27 and headers combined. a different ic only adds piece of mind.... good luck

I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Also, what is the best shop manual or books on the 930 that might deal with projects like this for the DIYer?

Are there any good websites that cover step by step projects like this?

Thanks!

I am going to piggyback on 86930s request. I need to find shop manuals or details about the CIS setup on the early 930s (in particular 76 turbo). I have a collection of parts and I don't know left from right.

Any books, web sites, or even pictures would be very helpful. Any suggestions?

Jürgen

Jurgen, I have the Turbo Carrera shop manual on paper. If you let me know what you need I might be able to help out.

Do a search on turbo911.com and 911turbo.com. There is a new K27 hybrid out there. A few people have started using it and I believe they all had very positive comments. I guess it spools up almost as fast as the k27 but can flow as much as ak29. Call Imagine Auto to get more details. From all that I have read from the new users of it, this would be the way I would go. New exhaust (headers & muffler) make a huge difference. To give you some numbers, 2 years ago I add B&B headers, K27 7200, Garretson Intercoller and 1bar spring. My dyno number jumped from 257 rwhp to 330 rwhp. Not just that, the boost comes on roughly 900 rpms sooner. Over all, a much better and more fun car to drive.

What I meant by piece of mind is, what an intercooler does is reduce charge air temp. Makes the air denser holds more fuel hence more hps. but it also reduces the chance of pre detonation which is the killer of turbo motors.... hence increased piece of mind especially if you run boost above .8 bar.
