911, Cayenne, and maybe an upcoming GT car... one positive perspective
I got this idea from another car forum and it helped me to see the SUV in a slightly different light, and more dramatically, make me welcome the GT car that may be in Porsche's future.
We hate the Cayenne. It's not a sports car yet it has a Porsche badge, something is terribly wrong. We look down on new 911s. They are too soft, watercooled, ugly, too heavy... too compromised. The GT3 is in the right direction, but why don't the other 911s inspire us? Ok, so a lot of Porsche buyers don't want a pure sports car. They want room and they don't want jarring suspensions. So the 911 is compromised for them. It has cupholders now for heaven's sake. I originally thought that the SUV was a horrible thing since it's more of a compromise, an uber-compromise if you will. Today I hear that some people are getting it instead of a 911. WHAT?!?!, how do you compare them? Well maybe they just want a Porsche and not a sports car. I think that this could mean something more for Porsche. If all the people who want more comfort would buy the SUVs, then the audience for the 911 would be made of a larger percentage of true sports car enthusiasts. Maybe this would influence design and we'd get more lighter, no frills, 911s from the factory. I don't think the SUV will do the job. Porsche needs a GT car that seats 4 adults comfortably, maybe 5. Then the 911 won't have to shoulder the burden of being the most practical Porsche that is not an SUV. Prior to the Cayenne, the 911 was the most practical Porsche... this must have something to do with why it is the car it is today, cupholders and all.

Go take a Cayenne for a 500-mile drive on 2-lane backroads and expressways. You'll discover they already make one ........ -- Curt |
