Speaking of AC. I have the whole system off my 89 except for a few hoses I cut. Any value as a whole or is it better to sell it in individual parts?

Save it for thenext owner

The only next owner I can think of is my 7 year old son;)

I used to chuckle about the Propane idea until I realized my gas tank with all its pressurized fuel lines running the length of my car has about 20 gals of explosive/flammable potential compared to 16 oz of Propane.

Duracool which is being used by some on this BB is just as flammable, so why not use Propane, it's cost effective and it works.

I read running straight propane will cause evaporator temps to go too low and cause it to freeze, so Duracool and Envirosafe have a blend with isobutane to adjust the temp/pressure curve upwards. One tip I have read is top off Duracool or Envirosafe with straight propane to really boost system performance.

just what I read on the internet :)

Freezing would be nice this time of year! :D

Actually the temperature switch normally cycle the compressor to prevent the evaporator from freezing, but if the switch is not working correctly the evaporator can freeze. Also not enough air flow through the evaporator can cause the coils to freeze. You will notice the evaporator is freezing because contrary to the air being colder, the air will be warmer because the ice in the coil will block the air from flowing thru the coils so it will flow around the coils.

My outlet temps on Propane start out in the mid 30's but start to creep up into the mid 40's as my evap strarts freezing up.

I need to find some isobutane and a way to get it into my system to adjust my temp/press curve up.

Any ideas?

Remove charge, install duracool, and then add propane. That'd be the way I'd do it. OK, somebody living in the Sahara desert without the EPA would vent the propane, but not all of it. Then, add duracool/envirosafe. The thing I don't understand is why Duracool is $6 a can. That's more expensive than R134a. I thought DuPont had a monopoly...

BTW, MSR camp fuel is 80/20 blend isobutane/propane. You could top off with a little MSR fuel to get your ratios closer to 50/50. This is all backyard engineering, though.

MSR camp fuel is what I use with torch propane from Home Depot. Works great, and a heck of a lot cheaper. Remember, if your system takes 36 oz of R12, you only use something like 12 oz of the propane/isobutane cocktail, or you will overcharge the system big time.

Here's a very detailed analysis in the subject for those that are more interested:

R12 alternatives

Steve,

That's exactly the information I was looking for.

Thanks,

Joe
