Question re the drive shaft on tranny that operates the speedo cable

I got together with a buddy this morning to try to fix the speedo on my RS. Same old story - speedo and odometer aren't working.

We manually tested the gauge and determined that it works. We looked at the gauge end of the cable and it doesn't rotate when the car is driven. We also used a screwdriver at the tranny end of the cable to rotate the cable and confirm that it isn't broken.

So unfortunately all evidence points towards the shaft on the tranny that operates the cable as being broken. Anybody know of any way to repair that shaft short of dropping the engine & tranny? I would hate to do all that work for something minor. Part of me wishes I had a bigger problem if the engine and tranny are coming out.

All advice & opinions are appreciated!

Wolfman
