Help: Wheel Caps

Hello all,

My wheel caps have been discolored from black to a silvery color. It looks like one of the previous owners sprayed a chemical onto the caps which faded the black paint. The areas where the black is faded is smooth, not flaky. I would like to know what I can do to get these caps totally black.

p.s. I may repaint the Porsche emblems on the caps in the future, but that's not so important to me at the moment.

Very carefully mask the crests. Then take an Exacto knife or razor blade and cut the excess masking around the indentation of the outline of the crest. Spray with paint of choice of matte or semi-gloss (your choice) paint. Peel masking away. I think this should work.

I'm going to buy some metal primer and Wurth black satin spray. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Can of Rustoleum BarBQ paint will give you the same flat black satin look that is on them now.

I have used Plasikote T-3 Hot Rod Black for that matte look. Available at the FLAPS.

I used Krylon spray for the black and hand painted the crest. Krylon seems to have more pigment and holds up well, but Rustoleum BBQ stuff should work just as well. A few coats of a CLEAR spray will keep them from getting road rash. Just make sure the Clear is compatible with the paint. i.e., don't mix laquer and enamel or you'll get that crinkle finnish.

If you took a picture of a Porsche and put it in your shirt pocket it would leak oil on your shirt.

Screw Flanders....
I'm goin' to Moe's.

I used the Rustoleum BBQ black glossy spray paint, with Rustoleum clear coat and my wheels caps came out great. Thanks for all the input.

edit: rustoleum bbq matte paint. then applied clear glossy coat.
