chain tensioner

Hi all,
I just took the chain tensioner covers off to do the upgrade and I noticed wear on the huosing by the cahain on the left side. What could be causing this???
The wear is by the numbers 1,2 and 3 hope the pic comes through

Have you had this apart before?

My guess is that only one side of the double-row chain is in mesh with the intermediate shaft sprocket.

maybe the cam sprocket is not in alignment

I have not had this apart before . there are no aluiminum filings or signs of wear on the chain. is it possible someone had been in there before??

I'd be surprised if no one has been inside before. Factory chain tensioners don't last that long. Does your chain have a removeable link? If so, that would indicate the chain has been replaced for one reason or another. BTW, how many miles on yours?

As I rotated the engine I could not see a link but the chain was tight and stayed clear from the housing. I suspect you are probably right about someone being in there before , who knows?
the car has 79000 mile on it, and not very many records were kept.
