70 911E Sporto pics
I finally got some pics of my 1970 911E Sportomatic if anyone cares to see my mistress.
I want to call these the 'before' pictures - as this is the condition of it when I got it - minus a pound of dust and mouse poop. Bit O history: This was 'given' to me a few years back. It has 65k kilometers (40k miles) and sat in a warehouse for many years. A relative asked if 'I needed a Porsche'. I giggled and said 'yeah' having no idea he had one wasting away in the warehouse. He said he had one and if I could get it home, I could have it. Side NOTE: **This is euro spec and was owned by a dentist in Japan (the seat belts and some stickers are in Japanese - Cool! I also found some YEN under the seat). When the dentist got married, his wife made him give up the car and it was shipped to the warehouse in Oregon** Got a Ryder truck and towed it from Dundee, Oregon to Sacramento, CA. Put a few bucks into it to get it running but 'the kids came and the money went away' and I didn't do much with it. Moved to Kansas City last year and had it stashed in my mother-in-laws garage while my house was being built. Picked up the car in June and put her in her own stall! The pics are how it looked when I picked it up. RE-gained interest when I did my single battery conversion and heard the car running (a sound I hadn't heard in a while). The 911E registry owner told me about Pelican and that fueled the fire (thanks) . I spend every night working on it. Cleaning something, painting something, talking to it (This board keeps me interested and just ordered 101 Projects and can't wait to dig in). the "Before" shots: HERE Brad

Love it. How is the underside of the car? I hope the chassis is as clean as the topside. Its like a time warp.

Nice looking ride! So how does the sporto trans run? Or have you have it on the road yet?
Does it still have the original hydro front struts??? Finally, what is a "8 track four channel stereo?!?!?"

Brad you did very well. I could have looked for years and thrown down $14k plus and not done as well. Whatever you do don't change a thing. Not even the 14" comfort group wheels. H1's, Euro turn signals, "Porsche 8-track", Sportomatic, damn it doesn't get any better. Your car is a shoe in to win the Preservation award at a Porsche Parade. Not kidding.

Bobby, you are obviously too young to have ever used an 8 track. They don't flip.

Brad, It sounds like you have a nice original car . Hopefully you will try to preserve it that way. Original cars only get scarcer as the years go by.
I love that 8 track! An 8 track is a continous tape loop player. The quad channel system took advantage of tapes that were recorded in 4 channels. It was the cool thing to have back then, but it didn't sound that much better than stereo, and very few things were recorded in quad. |

Thank you everyone for the WONDERFUL COMMENTS!!! According to my wife, the car is a 'piece (of *****)' because the oil line on the oil tank has a drip... I'm so glad to find a group that truly appreciates this as much as I do!
I would like to learn more about it (like what's a Long Hood, what is it worth?). Any info on this model I would love to hear. Point of concern in the car: -Popped seam on one of the seats. Shall I stitch it myself? -Needs a new headliner (original Ivory is yellowing/zipper separating...). DIY? -Someone removed the Air Conditioner 'stuff'. (I have no idea what's missing) -Door pockets sagging - ($400/piece - that can wait) -Would like to repaint it (original Light Ivory of course) Burning question: If I replace the headliner/repaint it - does that 'kill' the originality? Does it make it just another 'restored' car? Will it still be as cool? Brad If you (Pelicans) are ever in Kansas City (Lee's Summit to be exact) I'd love to show it to you and get some tips/hints on restoring it. I always have my Home Brews on hand. We can jam to redducati750's Thriller 8-Track and sip one!

You can take the car to automotive uposlstery (SP?) shop and they could stich it for you for very little cash, I believe headliners are readily available for this car-you can even get them in the original German Vinyl for a little more $. You can usually get door pockets used in great shape for alot less than $400. The repaint is where you are talking some bucks!!! You may get some differing opinions on the repaint, does it really need one? You may want to have it professionally rubbed out and see how it looks, you may be surprised. I had my 1969 rubbed out by a great body guy, the car looked brand new afterward. Everyone thought I had the car repainted. If you do end up repainting YOU MUST go with the original color....great little car you have!

Brad, I know the pictures you posted don't show all the paint flaws, but it looks to me like you should try rubbing and polishing it out with an aggressive compond. You have nothing to lose except a few hours and a sore arm, but you could be surprised at how much better it could look.
A repaint is nice to look at for sure but for me, original paint, even with patina, has an irreplaceable charm. Another nice thing about original paint is that it indicates that the car has never been crashed. I recently bought a 73 T with original paint. It has plenty of stone chips and flaws, and I couldn't be happier. It's a special order paint to sample color #624, Anthracite grey.
