Brake rotor question?
I am probably going to be doing new brake pads and possibly new rotors in the front pretty soon.
Do the new rotors need to be turned before I put them on or are they good to go out of the box?

Generally rotors are good to go out of the box. A run out gauge can be used prior or after install. If they feel smooth on your test drive they're gonna be ok, if they thump or what ever and you didn't check them prior, then ther're defective or need to be turned.

Thanks 91C2wrencher. I thought that was the case but a friend of mine said he thought I might need to have them turned.

Here's info for bedding in new pads and rotors (there are two different FAQs):

As 91C2wrencher said, unless the rotors aren't true or have bad gouges, just run them the way they come. They will be blanchard ground (non directional grinding) which is definitely the preferred surface prep for a rotor.
A lathe turned rotor is not the best way to ever surface a rotor. It is just cheap and easy to find some one to do it. Wayne

If they need to be turned take 'em back and get a good pair. Make sure you clean off the packing oil from shipping.
Have fun! |
