Porsche Sales

I saw Porsche's sales figures for August. 911 and Boxster sales are down 33% over last year. So there might be a bargain to be had as the 2004 start arriving. Porsche no longer breaks their inventory out, but it can't be too good.

I have heard that Cayenne inventories are pretty high, but they are allowing Porsche to claim higher sales. What's the quote, "there are lies, damn lies and statistics"

You can find the numbers here.

yeah, I have heard that the numbers are bad. I personally wish that the company would focus on racing more as in the past.

A week or so ago, Porsche announced to its suppliers that they're embarking on a big campaign to "get cost out of building the cars." i.e. to build 'em less expensively. Cheaper.

that kind of approach will keep me firmly in the early car camp. :-)

A big reason that Porsche sales are off could be related to the fact that MOST of us Porsche 911 owners on this website have no desire for a 996 at all... (Well, maybe a GT2) ;-)

good point silverc4s. I recetly took my 69 911 3.2 to my local shop and the guys told me as I left that they had more fun (and got more looks) driving it then the 996 cars they work on. There is something about the older cars that is frankly lacking in many new cars, not just p-cars.

Didn't that start happening in 1999?

Maybe a new 911 in 2004 as a 2005 model year will change things... (the claim of an authoritative German magazine)

The 997 is closer than we think

This seems strange though, with the plethora of 996 variants, turbo cab, C4S cab, GT3, next generation 996 GT2 (483+ hp )

Don't think the new cars are going to be any closer to our beloved early cars. Those days are over, everywhere, not just for Porsche.

Yep...we used to call it "soul". No racial tones intended here...it's just that the various cars each had their own personality. Today, everything seems to be more homogenized...

funny you mention that. my girlfriend recently needed a to get a car. as we live in NYC we didn't "need" a car but she wanted one. we looked at so many newer cars and she ended up going with a clean 280SL b/c she said "all the newer cars look the same and I learned to appreciate the older ones from watching you restore your 911". The sad thing is that I think that the car makers and the gov't are out to get us out of our older cars. just try to get insurance or deal with the hassle of inspections, it sucks!

Could Porsche have actually made the interior of my 1987 any cheaper than they did??????????? If they are looking to cut costs those cost cutting measures probably won't be coming from the luxuious interiors (hey, hasn't the Boxter's interior been criticized by every reviewer that's ever seen it?)

Good points. One of the deciding factors for me to buy an older 911 was the closing clip of 'Spy Game', when Robert Redford hops in that beautiful brown 911. Nice. I love old 911s! My boss has a new 996TT, and it is nice to look at the brakes and all, but nutin' like an oldie

On the german website "Elfer Club". members are reporting Porsche having dealers there register an unusually large number of cars during August, ostensibly to make the sales figures look better.

Go figure!
