7s&9s back from Al Reed. now I need some tire help. R compound on street?
The work was top quality but I am not sure I will like the look and am thinking maybe anodized would have suited me better. ...more later on that.
I am not sure if I am going to buy an R compound tire or not. I've run A008Rs and A032Rs on the street and they are fine except in the rain but they wear out pretty fast so may not do that this time. What is a good street tire choice that can be auto-x or taken to a D.E.?

Kumho V700 or Toyo RA-1 are good alternatives to the Yoko A-032 if you go with an R-compound. For street tires, Falken Azenis or the Bridgestone S-03.

Thanks JMZ. BTW, for tires, the kuhmo ecsta supras have good traction, and are cheap enough to beat them good at track and auto-x while still have good traction for wet when driving on the street.

JMZ,
The advantages of R compound are limited for street driving, and the disadvantages [rain, high wear rates] are significant. Give some though to a good street tire, like SO-3s, Exta Supras etc. Much better value, and still great for the odd track/autox days.

I guess I can't imagine running R compound tires on the street. I used to road race motorcycles, and between races I rode my bikes on the street too. At the track, you always warmed up the tires before you pushed them. The R compound tires don't work until they're warmed up.
They are awful on a cold day or in the rain. They wear out rapidly and you can go faster and safer on regular street tires. Heck, I even notice that my street beater, a Mustang Cobra running Firestone SZ50's, is temperature sensative. It's a much heavier car than you 911 and it's running street compound tires, but those tires break loose surprisingly easily when the ambient temps fall below 40 degrees. My 911 is too light to warm up it's tires much in my street driving.

Driving home from the last DE I noticed my A032Rs had become very noisy from wear. Great on the track and I love the car's feel when they're mounted. But Tony's correct. Get some good high-perf street tires.
