New enigine Oil temps???

I just installed my rebuilt 3.0L , I test drove it tonight for the first time. I need to seat the rings.

I had to add a front oil cooler (trombone style) because the car did not have one. The temps were 210 , I felt of the front cooler and it was cold. I know that the tstat is bad or stuck, but what temps should the car run without a front oil cooler?

Also it fells like it has no power , it's not zippy. Is this normal for a fresh engine or is something wrong? It fills like I'm dragging a bus behind me!

Help
Rick

I have a brand new tstat in my car and it usually doesnt open until it hits between 200 and 210. This is normal.

Not zippy? Have you checked your mixture and timing yet?

So it sounds like you got your fuel issues worked out? What was the problem?

Re-check the valve adjustment. It is possible for a bit of crud to get stuck between the valves and the head. After the engine has run any crap should get cleared out.

When the valves are to tight the engine just struggles to get up to revs.

It does feel like you are towing a bus.

Thanks everyone

Colin, Yes I did get the fuel problem fixed, It was the fuel mixture screw. It was leaned out (Way Out), I think that is still some of my issues that I'm having now. I don't have a co tester so I'm not sure of the setting. I will also try to check the valves this weekend.

Thanks for the help
Rick

On a hot day, with a new motor, and if you're flogging her hard, then I can imagine temps like that. But I would also make darned sure that the mixture and ignition timing are dialed in. Did the temperature settle down at 210? I mean did it stabilize there? If so, then I'm not particularly alarmed. Get the aux. thermostat working.

My temps stay below the first hash mark usually, particularly on cooler days or mornings, if I am not driving hard. On a hot day, laying the whip to her, temps can get to "nine o-clock."
