early 911 sales ads
So, if the U.S. versions all came with the sugar scoops, why do a lot of the original sales brochures show photos of the nicer european headlights?
Were these available as a dealer installed item? If so, they would'nt have met D.O.T. requirements. Anyone know the history?

My guess would be that the brochures all used the same basic pool of photographs, which were probably taken in Europe, of a prototype or show car, months before the model was actually available to the public.

I think Jack nailed it. The headlights? I added my H-1's shortly after buying the car, which had 7" round H-4's when I bought it. Oregon law allowed QI lights...must have been a states rights thing? Never got any cop hassles because of the lights, even when driving out of state.

Sugar scoops didn't come about until 1968 USA regulations took effect. Prior to then, all USA '65 thru '67 911 and 912 models had headlamp assemblies by Hella akin to 356 and '49 thru '66 VW Beetles, except for the outer chrome ring ... plain clear oval glass covers behind which resided USA-compliant sealed-beam headlamp bulbs [European models used similar Hella assemblies with replaceable 'Type A' 45/40 Watt bulbs] ...
For '69 thru '73 European models ... H1's were the 'proper' continental wear, and that is what all factory ad shots showed, unless specifically intended for the USA market ... even the factory USA brochures featured some of the 'European' shots sprinkled here and there! Most often, magazines' ads [like the one posted above] were prepared for multiple markets using the same factory pics and different language texts. The 1974 USA full-length 911 brochure featured some shots of the H1's, RS 3.0 and European 2.7 Carrera, as well as CIS 2.7 engines without shielded ignition wires ... all indicative of models not ever seen in USA showrooms ... Yes, H1's and H4's were available at dealers and from aftermarket suppliers all over the USA during the '70's ... my car came with H1's and never have had a problem on the road with police, or getting inpected, either!

Not necessarily pertaining to this topic, but I thought "Sugar Scoop" was another term for a duck tail? I've even seen that in print.
