Heat Exchanger modification/question

Ihave a 71t, 2.2, with heat exchangers that are in ok condition. So my question is, can I remove all that heat jacket stuff and still end up with a functional exhaust? I have no plans to drive this thing is weather that would requie heat and I know even the occasional shower will trap moisture and do the exhaust in.

I would just buy some SS headers.

You can remove the heat exchanger portion (sheet metal). At that point, you can inspect the header tubes for any signs of rust-through. If they're structurally okay, I'd suggest having them cleaned (sand blasted), then ceramic-coated (Jet Hot, SwainTech, or equivalent) inside and out for longer life.

What do people usually do with the fan housing outputs? Block them off or let them blow in the engine compartment? Maybe I'll post for some headers for sale.

You can buy the proper blockoff plates from various FG sources. BTW, the ID of an aluminum beer can is about the same size as the heater outlet tube. Cut one in half, then install w/a hose clamp. I've seen various street and race cars with this setup.

Here's a question for you guys. When the beer can is used as a block off "plug", I've seen a hole punched into the bottom (about 1/4"). Anybody know what this hole is for? One owner gave me an answer but I'd like some other theories.

mmmm beer. Must be to keep pressure in the keg while going down the road.

My guess is that the hole would allow for the expansion of the heated air in the heat exhanger thereby avoiding a new kind of pop off valve.
