Whenever I see an all fiberglass tail all I can think is yuch, but that is just me and my appreciation for a nice rubber lipped factory tail.
|
I'll second the yuch on the all fiberglass tails. They, IMHO, look cheap. Turbo tails are just too wide on a non-turbo body and the Carrera tail is almost too wide on an SC or Carrera. That said, if I could find a Carrera tail for $500 I'd take it.

In answer to your question YES it was an option by the factory.
I don't know which year they started but I definately recall this as being an option in 1988 and 1989. |

Here's a good question. Why doesn't anyone make an good copy of the Carrera or Turbo tail for a reasonable price? Can it be so difficult to create a mold? I assume the parts and even the labor would be nominal, especially if it's done offshore.

One way to go is a replica fiberglass base with a factory rubber piece. That is very hard to tell from a full OEM tail. |
The oem replica wings I have seen look pretty nice. If you're attached to the rubber lip look, just paint the fiberglass black. I just looked at NR auto real quickly (only because I remembered the address) and they have replicas for 495. I would try MA Shaw or BW Motorsports for higher quality stuff. If you call BW, make sure to tell Brad you are a Pelicanhead.

I bought my '86 with a Carrera replica tail already on it. The base is a fiberglass reproduction. The lip is a factory rubber piece. The base looks terrible. It has a significant amount of warp to it and sags a bit in the middle of the flat section.
I'm unsure whether this is just a bad reproduction or if they're all like this but I wouldn't use another replica. I'm on the hunt for a factory base. YMMV |
