Does anyone have any information about shipping a car that is not driveable from Utah to Calgary,Canada?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |

The actual shipping (truck?) is the easy part.
The documentation (Customs) is the hard part. Unless you know the routine, pay a Customs Broker to do it for you. They don't charge much for the trouble they save.

When you are shopping for a trucking company, ask if they cross the border regularly. If so, its easy for them, they'll know what to do. I had a friend who drove a car carrier across the border every week.
The fact that the car does not run is a problem, they won't be able to drive it on and off the carrier. They will charge extra. |

Mike:
Did the same a few years ago. As long as the car is over 15 years old and meets a few other criteria, no problem. If a German car, you will need to pay GST and a small duty. Probably the best bet would be go down to Utah with a trailer and bring it across youself. Having a shipper do it will cost $'s both for shipping and broker work. PM me if you have any particular questions. Tim |

If the car is going to be trucked the not running part is not an issue as to customs/importation issues. Note that (as Tim mentioned) if the car is LESS than 15 years old you'll have to jump through some hoops (check the RIV website) that would be a PIA if the car is inoperable.
If more than 15 years from mfg date. you'll pay GST (on purchase price or reasonable value if purchase price seems too low) AND duty at 6% because the car is German made. That duty came as a big suprise to me this spring - free-trade doesn't apply to the German made cars. So plan on tacking 13% (7+6) on top of everything else to land the car in your driveway. Good luck. |

The 6% duty won't apply if the car is more than 25 years old. After that age, its considered an "antique auto" by CC.
Beware, the US customs requires that you pass the car's title through their hands before it leaves the US. This takes 3 days MINIMUM. They will not expedite things even though it only takes them a few hours to do their checks (to verify it isn't stolen). However, there is no check on the CDN side to make sure this is done first. If I were to import a car, I would pass right on by US customs. |

Mike. go to Canadian Tire, they have all the info. That's right, I said Canadian Tire! They have a deal with CCRA and have the info in nice little free booklets. I promise to never tell anyone to go to Canadian Tire again for their Porsche stuff!!
