PPI costs
Hi All,
I am looking to have a PPI done on a 89 930 in Michigan. I've just called a place that seems to be recommended by others and they are quoting $100 for a very basic inspection. If I want compression/leakdown tests done, they are estimating approximately $400-$500 for it. Is this reasonable? What else is everybody paying for their ppi's? Thanks!

When I was shopping for my 911 2 years ago, complete PPI's (see the Pelican Tech Article) with compression/leakdown were in the $200-300 range.
Be sure you are using a shop that has extensive experience with the years of Porsches you are looking at.

I just had a prospect pay the local dealership $100 for a basic PPI on my Carrera - no leakdown or compression. I assume those tests would be a little more involved with a 930, as the intercooler probably has to come off to access the plugs.

Local European repair shop that does a fair amount of Porsche work: ~$250. About three hours labor for complete inspection.

That reminds me...I asked a shop on Sat. (where we had a PCA tech session). Boss said 3 hrs. labor and that includes leakdown. They charge $78 per hour.

I contacted another shop (also recommended here) and they quoted $100 for the initial visual inspection and then $330 for the additional leakdown tests. He said there is quite a bit that needs to be moved out of the way to do the tests properly.
Anybody else done this for a 930? Thanks!

That actually sounds pretty reasonable, I think I may have even paid more. I used Munks in Waterford, Mi. They charge you by the time they actually spent-you can be standing next to them the entire time if you would like. They are really good. They know these cars better than anybody I have worked with. Even if it costs you $500 it is still better than having a $35,000 pile of Turbo junk in your garage!

I bought an 86 930 two months ago. It cost $255 (3hrs @ $85) for the PPI. There is a lot that needs to be taken off to do the leakdown/compression test.
One additional piece of advice: Make sure they do a complete inspection of the body panels and paint as well! My PPI came back very favorable with respect to the engine, great leakdown numbers etc., but they apparently spent ALL their time checking mechanicals, because they missed the fact that the rear quarter and one door had been repainted! I was PO'd when I found it myself....after I bought the car. Fortunately, I had it checked out at a body shop and it was not significant damage (probably keyed or scratched). I would have gladly paid for another hour worth of labor for them to thoroughly check the body/paint etc. Anyhow...check the body as well as mechanicals, and DON'T skimp with the $100 PPI.
