Track Insurance or lack there of.
I don't carry seperate track insurance for my car at DE's. Too expensive for the protection offered. I own my car outright and it's a weekend toy.
I got to thinking though, if I screw up and hit someone on the track, who's liable. Would thier track insurance cover. It's not a matter of wanting to or not wanting to pay, it's a matter ability. It costs nothing out of my pocket to walk away from the car I own if I twist it up. There are a number of $100,000 plus cars in our club even in the green group, and the out of pocket could get ridiculous quick. So what happens?

So far, and I mean so far, there have been few reported legal actions due to mishaps on the track while in a competition event. Most, if not all, racers realize that there is risk. Generally, you take the damage home and fix it at your expense, whethet it's your fault or not.
The medical part is what's scary. I've had more than one health ins policy that asked specifically if I raced or skydived. Of course, I said yes to the racing because I didn't want the whole thing cancelled due to false statements. And, of course, racing injuries were excluded. I've only been to the ER once on a race weekend and it was for a gash on my thumb that happened in the pits AFTER the race. A few stitches took care of that. Today, that would cost a $1000. Medical is going to run you way more than car repairs. |
