Addition to the fallen CV axle on 930
 

About a month ago I was driving and all of a sudden one of my CV axles actually fell off of the transaxle and left me stranded.

To make a long story short, after purchasing more Axle bolts to replace the ones that fell out. I inspected the underside and the axle end and no real damage occurred. The question is .....

Do I really need the small thin paper gasket that attaches between the joint and the transaxle flange. Mine was ripped up. I talked to a local Porsche mechanic and he tells me "throw it out as you do not need it." The only important aspect is the boot to be in good shape and the torque on the bolts to be at least 60 ft-lbs.

If it was me, I would get eight new paper gaskets (spares on hand for the future) ... remove both axles, disassemble, clean & repack all four CV's (one at a time) with Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease with Moly. The following threads may help ...

Being the cheapskate I am, on my '75, I bought $1 worth of gasket paper at Kragan and cut some new ones myself. No problems in ~300 miles now. They are fragile, fiddly little guys though.

If you discard them, please do let us know how it works out. I had similar thoughts about whether they are necessary, but did not have the guts to try it - I didn't want to spray CV grease all over my new clean engine. :)

a quality job would include the gaskets. grease will sling out of the gap to some extent, without them.

I was trying to install the gearbox-end CV joint one time and was having a huge amount of frustration in getting the bolts started. After alot of profanity, I got two or three of the bolts installed and then had to admit defeat as something was wrong. When I pulled it back apart, I noticed that this paper gasket in question had slipped and my efforts to get the bolts installed had essentially ruined it.

It pissed me off so much I yanked it out and threw it away and installed the CV joint without it. I have not noticed any leakage as a result (and I've looked). YMMV.

I used the gaskets and they squished out in turn made the bolts loose and they came off lucky for me I was at a stop light I didn't use the tin covers to contain the gasket on the flange but did the second time around :eek:

I did not mention that I also noticed some very light scoring on the bearing races (very small thin hair type). Again, the same mechanic said while this is not like new, that it is also not a major problem and that porsces are "heavy duty, ....it's OK".

From past experience with cv joints on 951's, slight scars don't kill them, pitting and obvious warpage does. The stickier the grease that you use the better.

You can also run them in the other direction to get some more life out of them.

I've never seen the gaskets squeeze out ... unless grease was applied to them prior to installation, or if flange and CV-joint were left greasy before installation!!!

The gaskets are supposed to be installed on a CLEAN, DRY surface.

I must admit. One of mine doesn't have the gasket. I don't have a lift, so I was under the car putting them back on. Well, my arms were so tired of trying to hold 'em up, fight the gaskets, and tighten the bolts, that I forgot the last gasket for some reason. I got all done and saw it sitting there. I could have screamed! I just left it off. It's been about a year and a half and no grease anywhere. But, I still have the gasket just in case :)
