Need Help Removing Accelerator Cable from Accelerator Bell-Crank
 

The project du jour is rebuilding my pedal cluster. I am having a little trouble with removing the accelerator cable from the accelerator bell-crank as instructed in the Bently manual. Here is a picture:

There is a little clip located at A. I unhooked that, and it doesn't seem to do much. There is a 8mm nut at B that I loosened, and that didn't do much either. This cable is the only thing left holding me up from getting the cluster out. I have everything else detached except for the nuts underneath the car, and that is straight forward.

I know this must be something really simple, and that's why all the books just say do this rather then explaining how to do it. Any help appreciated for the newbie mechanic.

I'm not sure this applies to an '82, but on my early 911 ('69), there's a clip that holds a pin on the throttle arm with a hole in the throttle cable end (forget the proper clip name). If you look further rearward (about 1") on the long throttle cable, you might see where the sheet metal lock friction-clips over the cable. If this applies, pop this clip upward with a short screwdriver, then separate the joint. Have a magnet handy to retrieve the clip when it comes off.

If you have a ball and socket-type joint, pry them apart with a screwdriver or equivalent.

If there is a small wire pin clip in the ball joint you have to unclip it and remove it out of the socket , or the pivot ball wont come out of the socket !.

So ..remove wire stay clip and then pry off socket with a screwdriver or other lever tool ..

I use a small crescent wrench to pry - it gives excellent leverage and prys from both sides. Use something like a 10mm or 12mm wrench...

Doh! I didn't realize the pin clip came out. I just unhooked it. The small hands thing isn't what gets me. I'm amazed that every single thing connected to the pedal cluster has is connected in a different way. Also, if I had known what a pain it was to work down there I would have either taken out the drivers seat, or the steering wheel, or maybe even both. I'm not even a big guy, 5'10" 175 pounds, but it was still a pain working in that small space.

I by the way I didn't say thanks for all the help. Your collective advice has helped me get the cable out. Now I can jack up the car, and unbolt the last two bolts from the bottom, and the cluster will be out!

you might be doing it this way already, but the flat bar and the round rod both are disconnected at their top ends and stay attached to the cluster as it's removed and reinstalled. disconnecting them at the bottom adds mucho frustration.

At the top? Dang. Learn the hard way I guess. The round rod on the brake pedal was pretty easy, but the flat bar attached to the cluster frame was a pain because I had to take the spring off the clutch pedal. That was a real PIA. I'll take those out, and reassemble everything on my workbench before I put the cluster back in.
