My new 1968 soft window 911, opinions please !

Hello,

at last I have bought the car, it's a 1968 911L soft window targa, I think it's an euro model exported to USA, now it's coming back to Europe to my garage.

I will have it here next month, I have some photos and would love to hear from your experienced opinions:

http://www.oldautoradio.com/911L

THANKS to EVERYBODY, you have been very helpful in my research !!!

Josep

L is a US model...

Weird, too, your gauges are not US gauges, like mine aren't, but yours are completely different than mine.

Bizarre.

Looks great, I am guessing that it is a Euro car also. My '68 912 soft rear window has a different vent opening on the rear deck lid - single
large opening vs the divided one on yours. Beautiful - enjoy.

nice find. I've always thought the softwindow targa's are the best types of targa's.

I've owned a 68 911L coupe and a 68 911 soft rear window targa. I believe the instruments are out of a straight 911. The L came with S-type instrumentation. The straight 911 came with idiot lights.

It looks like a sweet car. And yes soft rear window targa's are neat....

Also, look in the engine bay. The 68 was the first year of emission control. The 68S could not meet emission standards, but the straight 911 would with a GM smog pump installed on the left cam shaft. The euro cars did not have this pump. You'd take the car through emissions and then disconnect he pump and tune it. I even knew some guys who would take the pump off, shorten the cam shaft and install a 67 chain housing plate

L model Targas came in US and Rest of World as follows:

11860001-11860307 (Rest of World)
11855001-11865134 (USA)

Your chassis number should tell you which is which.

Welcome to the group!!!

Hello,

mine is 11860047, so it seems that this is ok for an euro model.

Welcome to the L club. Nice car. The car is an euro, the temp and fuel gauges is a giveaway. I have a US manual and rest of the world manual if you need any info, there are some diffrences.

Is the decklid original it sure looks diffrent?

I am curiously intrigued by Josep's signature/screen name. Maybe this is why:

Interesting... I didn't know there was ROW 911L's... since its basically an S with a detuned motor for US emissions. Based on a better VIN chart, mine's a euro model, too. That explains everything being in German, but doesn't explain why my dash gauges are completely different than the ones shown here. (The gauges for fuel/oil and temp/pressure are vertical not horizontal as in this car...)

My L has a different S/N altogether, 118054xx. After I purschased the car I sent my purchase info to B.A. to include in his market reports, and I asked him about the S/N because the sources I had said the 0 indicates it as an 'S'. He told me that my # indicated a late build of L's. My fuel/oil & temp/press gauges are vertical and my car has stuff like chrome trim on the interior, rear sway bar, and basket weave vinyl on the dash.

Your new 911 is beautiful! Bet you have a radio already picked out for it. Ha! Looks like you have some really nice ones on your site now. I particularly like the Bamberg cassette player/recorder model. At one time, I was looking for one of these for my restoration....but now I am having a hot 3.0 built to replace my 2.7 so I guess I can deviate from factory a bit and will probably get a modern stereo setup from Rod Birch. Enjoy!!

it has the original radio, I won't change it, I will just take out this stereo added, luckily without any kind of modifications to door panels !!

Thanks for the offer Josep, I sent you a pm.

Be sure to create a page in the owner's gallery if you haven't already. I can't wait to see pictures from when you finally receive the car.
