When I started looking in to this Joel Resier had 2 ex Daytona 3.8 RSR engines @ ~ $30k great engines but not suitable for the street. Dave Valliere had several 964 and 993RS @~$20-25K but there was no real documentation and there were some issues with missing pieces.

That left either doing a 964 as a 3.8 vram which is being done by one of us who may wish to remain anonymous, or a '95 993 to 3.8, or '96 on 993 to 3.8 I chose to by a '97 euro 993 and have it totaly rebuilt to RS spec

Here is a rough cost outline
  • engine ~$10k for a euro vram
  • p/c ~$6.5k for RSR or ~$4k for RS
  • cams and cam drive~$1k

    Bill,

What type of intake do you have. And how much $$ less would it be to take a 1995 3.6 and put sport cams, RS valve springs,& retainers & etc rather than the full blown 3.8 conversion.

    Also, nice exhaust system.
  • valves ~$100 ea x 6
  • the rest is standard rebuild parts, rod bolts gaskets, chain, head studs etc ~$2k
  • custom chip/dyno time ~$5-900

lots of little labor intensive machine/prep work

By careful shopping you can get much better pricing than above, In all cases I paid a little to a lot less but those are the listed prices.

For a street car vram is definitely worth it, for a race car I would start w/ a '95 993

The RS 102/107s are fine for street use, but you will want the 102/109 RSRs for a race car. There are other versions of aftermarket p/c available up to 4.2 liters but the cost would make your eyes pop out.

The result is an easy 300+ hp and a ton of toque, both 275/40 can all too easily be lit up in the lower gears.

Please note that a stock 964 is perfectly compatible w/ stock 911 gearing tires and brakes, ALL of these will need suitable mods w/ the 3.8 it is in a whole different ball park.

Bill,

What do you have for an intake. And how much less$$ would it be to take a 1995 3.6 and do an upper end conversion rather than a full blown 3.8 RS? eg. sport cams, RS valve springs, retainera,& etc.

A really nice mod is the 993ss cams on a 964 or '95 993. It's relatively cheap, I would do bigger valves and new guides etc at the same time which will increase the cost but also eliminate a big headache in these late engines(soft guides). This can all be done for ~$2-3k depending on who does the work.

You will net a bit less that 300hp and the extra torque (which is the nicest part of big displacement) will not be there but it will be a lot of bang for the buck. Be sure to upgrade headers & chip at the same time.

Mine is just the stock vram intake.

Bill:

Your car looks great. How come you went with an airbox instead of a cone airfilter?

Lew

Bill Verburg 09-12-2003 01:02 PM

1)I don't feel that the aftermarket cones doa s good a job of filtering

2)Even if the cone filter ok I don't like the mess of cleaning and reoiling as opposed to just popping a new clean filter element in place

3)A cold air intake will be easier to fab.

OK, am I the only one who thinks it's insane to put $25k in an engine for 340HP?

Unless, of course, you have money to burn...

BTW I think it's great that you have a 3.8 in your 911, and I'd LOVE to have one in my SC, but I just couldn't put that type of money into an engine...

Bill Verburg 09-12-2003 01:49 PM

Schuey, If you want logical buy a Honda Civic

I built my car for me, and I am the only one that needs to be happy

and I am :D

k9handler 09-12-2003 02:12 PM

Bill,
if you built your car for me...I WOULD BE HAPPY!

Bill Verburg 09-12-2003 02:17 PM

The only other car that I have ever had as much fun w/ is a 427 Cobra. there is a lot to be said for overpowered N/A cars.

I have also driven overpowered turbos, but it's just not the same

Cams. compression and displacement do it for me.

It is insane but isn't any hobby if you are really into it? It's kinda like those damn dry roasted peanuts, I always think I just need a handful and before you know it I am out of Coke and peanuts!
