OK, not only am I looking at a 75 911S for a daily driver (see other thread), but I have recently sourced a 2.2L flat 6 that I plan to put into my 69 912. (Gee, how many 911s are TOO many?)
Anyway, I happened to mention this on a 912 board that I frequent and I got flamed HUGE by the 912 owners there. Post after post about how I am desecrating an appreciating classic and how much better and more valuable the 912 will be soon. One guy keeps posting ads he finds for six-figure 912 and sub-$10K 911s just to reinforce his opinion and stated that a 69 912 targa is worth 50% more than a 69 911 targa. What's up with that? My 912 is hardly stock anyway (all 911 underneath, 2.4L F4 914 engine, etc) so what's the big deal? C'mon 911 owners, I need some allies right now! ![]()

Banned but not out, yet..

A 912s power to weight ratio makes them excellent for auto-x. But that's not what you are looking for. Hold on to the 4 banger for future sale with the car, and slap that 2.2 in and roar away. But don't admit it to the 912 crowd unless you like the heat.

Yes.
Honestly, it's your car so make the changes you want. Also tell these 912 boys to go a flame Bruce Anderson, that is what he started doing in the early days. |

Uh, I don't see how the 912 is going to out value the 911. That's ridiculous.
The 912 guys must be overly sensitive or sniffing glue or something.

You have my approval.
Now would you send me some of the best fish & chips I ever had ?. Not to far from the Empress hotel where the fishing boats come in, cooked fresh off the boat. Better yet, I'll come up there and help you put that Six in the 12 ![]() That's a Beautiful Island you live on. ![]() Last edited by Bob's Flat-Six; 09-11-2003 at 05:29 PM.. |

you want to collect it or drive it? The only 912 that will be worth anything will be a pristine all original GQ that doesn't see the streets. Other than that, it is pretty much the economy 911-wanna be (hey, that's the way they were new). You can rationalize about weight bias this and not, but as long as I've been looking, 912s cost less than 911s, and are generally in poor condition since they are cheaper (the cheap buy, don't maintain syndrome).

Actually, I'm looking for a 912 engine to drop into my 356C. Is yours for sale?

I don't think many of us will live long enough to see 912's valued anywhere near 356's (or early 911's).

OK 912 disbelievers, just stare into the fan... concentrate... you're starting to feel inadequate... can you feel the need for speed growing within you? Good. Is the desire to own a real Porsche getting stronger? Good. Now when I snap my fingers, you'll awake calm, contented and desparate to put a real engine into your car... SNAP!

Hmm, I live here and I haven't done either of those things... I really need to spend less time under my cars!

Don't feel bad. Look at my situation:
I live in a town where it's said "my people will call your people." Problem is, I don't have any "people."

yeah, I'll take a Super 90 engine too!
A 69 LWB chassis would make an awesome vintage racer with SOVREN here in the NW. The few 912's we have turn laps times as fast as most of the 911's. Less tail weight and they carry more speed through the turns. Last time I was on Vancouver Island (Victoria), I was surfing, it was new years weekend 2001/02, it was snowing and the waves were fabulous! It was one of the great adventures of my life!

Hey MarkP, got any good places to look for either a 912 or 356 engine? Mine has a Type I VW...36 or maybe 40HP. It doesn't run yet but I could probably push the car faster than if it did run.

They are getting hard to find, a ratty 912 motor sold this week on eBay for around $1,500. The 912 case is the preferred choice for race cars as they have better oil flow. 356 motors do come up for sale on eBay and the 356 Registry email talk list.
You can also call my good friends the Emory's at Parts Obsolete www.356shop.com

Hey guys, I'm new to the board although I have been learning alot from your posts for the past several months.
I had the chance to buy a 912 that needed some floor board work but the car was in nice shape other wise. I went to the 912 forum and read in the faq page that you should'nt buy a 912 as a cheap alternative to the 911. leading me to beleave that it's not worth hot rodding for more power and handeling. Is this the case? judging buy this thread it is not. I wanted to use the 912 for autoX-ing. who this be a good canidate? I have loved the 911 and the 912 since I was a kid and the price was right on the 912. I can weld and if floor boards are available I would reconsider taking a look at it. what do you think? It's a 69 with 101K (not rebuilt) with original siver paint. body is in nice shape. interior is 101K looking, but every thing is there. . $4,500.00 asking price. |

sounds like a fun car to drive. Any mostly unmolested Porsche is worth something--except of course 924s. But the rest, definitely. There was a 914 for sale a few years ago with 55k miles...2 owners. Around 13k. Nice green. It was a '75. I'd have paid it--esp since I was just in awe of looking at a car where the battery tray, jack points, trunk, interior...looked basically the way it would have looked when it was taken out of the showroom. It was really really nice. Anyway, a mostly stock 912 for that price would be a fun restoration project esp since everything is there. fix the boards and go at it.
