Looking for advice on purchase of this 70t

Hello all,

I've been on this board for a good year now absorbing all the knowledge you all provide, and I'm thankful to have you all as a resource.

I've began looking for a 72, 73 911 for a while now, but came across this very clean 70 in my FAVORITE color. I spoke on the phone with the dealership and the car has EXTENSIVE records since 99 with some dating back to 91. Original color, but repainted sometime in the past. Pretty much everything (engine, suspension, brakes, steering) has been changed, replaced, or upgraded at some time in the near past at reputable shops (acres, speedline, performance products).

Previous owner traded in because wife wanted a cabriolet.

Do you guys think it's worth it for a T, even though it's pristine?

What would you offer?

101,000 miles
vin 9110120192
Asking 14950

Thanks in advance

Aharon

looks nice but the devil is in the details....you will need to supply a lot more for a judgement to be made

Beautiful car, love the color! Did you check the underside carefully for rust?

I haven't made it out there yet, just talked on the phone with the contact at the dealer.

I figured I'd post here first so I'm a little more prepared when I see it tomorrow.

That car is on ebay and they have it listed at a Turbo. I think you could find a better car for the money they want.

Where on ebay?

I found it at a local dealer. Could you provide the link?

The problem is finding one local(doesn't need to be, just easier), in that color (doesn't have to be, but its my favorite), coupe (don't want a targa), non-sunroof (not that big a deal), with so much money and care put into it, recently.

I know they'll come down a bit, question is how much, and like you said can I find a better deal.

Could be a great early car....only an independent PPI will tell you for sure.

My dilema is that I can find 70-73 t's all day long for $6-10k. But by the time I get one of those to where this one seems to be at already, I'm pretty sure I'll have alot more than difference between the two invested. Am I wrong?

that car is almost exactly what I would choose (2.2 in orange). Looks like a great car, and as you say, if those are the updates you'd do anyway you likely will be ahead of the game IF they were done right, and the car is dry/straight.

Beauty....I like it a lot.

How much are they asking for it? That would probably help people give an estimate on probable selling price.

Car looks mighty good in the photos.

he said asking $15K. Hard to say if it is worth it...to the right buyer, I'd say yes. If it is clean and dry, and you were going to do those mods anyway, what the heck. If you want to sell it later on though, realize that you will have to find another "special" buyer to get any money out of it. Pristine unmolested examples will always be in demand...modded ones have a smaller market imho.

Getting the money back out of it is my only major concern at this point (besides not having done a ppi yet), in the unforseeable event that I would be forced to sell it at some point down the road.

Damn that color. It's amazing how emotions/decisions can be swayed by our visual and other senses.

In terms of mods, I don't think they're something I'd do until later on down the road with a stock car, maybe not ever (besides the neccessary functional updates and such). This also makes it hard to justify. Damn that color.

Asking price is 14950, but the guy said it is negotiable.

I'm just going to have to add up everything done to it and see.

Sorry, saw the miles and VIN but skipped right past the asking.

It's been too hot here in Oregon!!! We're not built for these temperatures - I can't focus.

I think with a clean PPI, (strong motor, tranny, NO rust) it's easily a $12,000 car. But, you need to be looking for a "Gruppe" or modified-type ride. Those mods are going to add up quick on a stock car. (I would probably lose the stripes and put chrome headlight rings on it though.) If you have to think about how much you can sell it for in a hurry it might not be the car for you.

Good luck,

Jeff

Jeff? Hot? Hmmm, maybe it wasn't just roadside brush that burned in the Cascade Locks fire, some wacky tobacky mixed in? Then the gorge winds carried it to Portland, and...
On a more serious note, you know anything about the silver/black/sports seats T being advertised in The Portland Yellow Pages? (aka OREGONIAN?) Asking $14,500 for that one. Ah hell, I'll copy the full ad: "70 911T silver/blk int. S appearance group. sports seats, rebuilt engine. $14,500. 503-671-4982."

The car in the pics? judging by the pics, it looks like another good looking RS clone. Only a go look, then followed by an independent PPI if deserved would really determine what it's worth...or what you should offer. If it's a stock 2.2 T under the lid tho, it can't deliver what it advertises. To build a 2.7 RS engine from scratch? Done by a qualified pro? Figure mid teens $...

Project 911,

I understand your predicament, considerably fewer old 911's on the east coast than the west because of this I paid over the odds on my 72 911T; reasonably nearby and viewable, pretty good condition, good motor (though little history), top end rebuild, very minor cosmetic rust, new interior... Since buying it 20 months ago I have spent around $7,000 on improvements and upgrades, not including servicing. If I come across a few extra bucks I can always find a way of spending it on the car - most P-Car owners will have the same problem.

My only advice is do not buy an older Porsche to make money, buy it because you love it. Same as all older cars - you will not get your money back. If it's a keeper and you enjoy it, who cares?

I would want more details, but in general the car looks pretty appealing to me, I even love the color - mine is Signal Yellow. Buy complete beater and you could end up spending considerably more ...

Good luck

Boy that IS a great color - now that you've found it it is CRITICAL to ignore the emotional implications of the paint. From here in in, put on that poker face and treat it like a business deal.

A good PPI is crucial to not losing your shirt, pants AND hat on this one.

- check for rust, then check again... and then check one more time. All the usual places (fr pan, batt boxes, rockers, windshield corners, package tray, rear seat tubs, floor, pedal mount...) Bring a magnet wrapped on cloth to ID filler.

Have engine and trans thoroughly gone through - a rebuild would put you way in the hole at this price. You'd be getting into decent S prices for what you'd have in it.

I'd want to put $2k into it immediately - replace tail with correct lid, remove graphics - hopefully they aren't clear coated (I don't see the point in a non flared RS clone with T power), period correct prototipo wheel, ditch the low profile tires (just don't look right on an early car), chrome headlamp rings and horn grilles, front bumper trim (a must have to go with rear and rocker trim), proper shift knob, RS replica seats...

Did I say $2K? Oh Boy does this stuff add up.

But GEEZE that's a great color!

First off I'd like to say thank you to all those who've provided input it is very much appreciated, you're helping my thought process along this decision.

nigel911-
I never really see anything I purchase as an investment, or ever really plan to sell anything I'm looking at purchasing (I'm still fairly young). I find it easier to make decisions this way, and minimize the chance of regret. Then agian I've never made a purchase such as this one before.

I've just been an enthusiast my entire life like most of us on here.

The reason I'm even considering a car this "finished" is because of what I've read on this board. I always do all my own work and take pride in what I do, and attempt to do a better job than if I had the work done by someone else. All of my vehicles up to this point have started off as projects or beaters. Usually this is a great way to save money (at the expense of time) and has always worked out in the past.

However. Since reading this forum I've come to the conlusion that porsches don't play nice when it comes to buying a "beater" and fixing it up, and I'll end up doing what I was trying to avoid in the beginning (wasting time and money, if you can call working on your porsche a waste of time).

The other reason is I don't have as much time these days hence the reason behind buying a somewhat "finished" car (if there is such a thing).

Aharon
