Chamois Wash Question?

Hey,
Quick question I wonder if any of you have ever done. I was at a local concours a few weeks ago. Prior to judging the guy next to me (911SC) pulled out a sealed bucket with some water a Chamois and began wiping down his car. He would wipe a section down, ring out, rewet and do another section. It actually looked really good when he was done. My questions are wouldn't this scratch the paint? As dirt is being collected on the Chamois? Also I did not see how he dried it, would you follow up with a towel or just let it air dry. I was thinking this may be nice alternative to a full wash. Thoughts?

Cool

He was probably continuously/slowly lifting the front edge to collect the dust, then cleaning.

Modern paint is pretty durable. Not that you should flail a wet cloth over a filthy car, but I assume that if he'd driven it to a concours, it had a couple of hours worth of dust on it at worst. That's not going to bother good paint.

That sounds a bit anal to me. The spray detailers work very well when used properly. I have to admit that I have considered using some de-ionized water and a chamois, which I think would do the same thing as the spray detailers but since the spray detailers are so easy to get and use I haven't done it. I use the One Grand spray and the Griots spray
they both work very well.
