Falling Engine & Tranny - %

Don't know if this was discussed before but....

Has anyone heard of the 4 bolts (1 or more) that hold the engine and tranny failing? It just amazes me that only 4 bolts are holding that much weight!!!! I would think that there would be a nut at each end for peace of mind.

There are nuts on each end. I've never seen one fail, but I have seen the actual motor mount (the flat plate) fail. It was in a race car at last year's Tribute to Le Man at Willowsprings raceway. The driver (we'll leave his name out of it. hehehee!) drove for two laps with the engine draggin' on the ground. Believe it or not, it kept runnin'. I believe they had to replace the exhaust, cylinder head (right side) and the valve cover on the right side. After the repairs, the motor was driven for another 40+ hours.

From some of our threads you'd think these cars are fragile. The are not!!!! Tanks, I tell ya.

That's what I've been saying. If we didn't spend so much money, and time, and energy on these cars, they'd still be more reliable than Hondas or Toyotas. (faster too....hehehehehe)

This is nothing to worry about. My father was a mechanic in the Air Force and once showed me one of the TWO bolts used to hold a B-52 wing on to the fuselage. Admittedly, the bolt was a long as your forearm and bigger around but still only two of them were used. Really short threaded area to boot. I guess if the nut is fully threaded, anything more is useless.

I havn't been around Porsches for very long so I dont know about the bolts failing. But on my 81SC I did have an engine mount fail (rubber part deteriorated) and the bolt pulled straight through the large washer on top of the mount. It literally turned the round hole in the center of the washer into a hex the size of the bolt head. Deformed the crap out of that washer.

Something to be said about proper engineering
