Tie down hooks
 
I ordered a nice set of tie downs for my 911 from a fellow Pelikanite this spring, need another set for the 73. These are the nice red ones that bolt on to the shock absorber mount (rear) and are really nice for quickly loading and attaching tie downs on a trailer. Anybody recall the website for these?

This is where I got mine from... I wish they made a set for the front of my early 911.

Does your 73 have the attachment hok (or whatever) up front?
These rear ones are one hell of a lot easier than trying to thread straps thru brake dust and grease ..NOT thru brake lines ..you know the drill...

I do have the tow hook up front, but I would never use that to strap to. I don't trust its strength, and I think that it would put my straps at too great an angle.

I have seen some Weltmiester units that mount under the front A arm mounting points, but they were $100 for the pair, kinda rediculous. Not to mention that my car is so low already, that these things would become a hazard. So I'm still looking for the right answer...

I've seen a lot of guys use a ring welded to an old wheel lug - you place one on each wheel and voila.

Ryan..ever seen those available commercially?I am pretty challenged when it comes to engineering such things. Wouldn'y have a drawing of these I could take to a friendly welding shop would you?

skip shirley makes the ring/steel lug holders- he advertises in excellence and pano. i've seen plenty of people use them- i am not so certain of the load they can see on a trailer bouncing around....

Richard - no drawing handy but pretty simple. A ring or loop of metal is welded to the outer end of the wheel nut so it protrudes away from the car. Just put the car on the trailer, put one of these thingys on each wheel and go. - Ryan

I'd have to agree with that, but the nice thing is that they are on the dead part of the suspension, so bounce is limited to sidewall flex. This is what makes the trailing arm tie downs so neat, they are on the outboard end allowing the car to move and take some of the shock. I have them on my 914. I tie to the brace of the A-arm in front. That is not on the outboard side and I'm going to come up with something better for the front without pulling it out of alignment.

Whatever you do, don't tie the car straight down unless you are just using over-the-tire straps. The further out the attachment to the trailer, the more freedom the car has to absorb shock. Not to mention teathering for for and aft movement. Longer is better.

Thanks guys..got a set on the way...
At the last DE I had my new (to me) RS clone and it was incredibly frustrating putting the rear loops into a very tight space..IN THE POURING RAIN! Swore I'd fix the problem before the next DE!
