two days and 1100 miles later... My new 911 is in the driveway

Flew up to Indianapolis Monday morning arriving at 9:45am. Spent twenty minutes test driving the car. PPI had been done on the car last week so I knew what to expect. Spent another twenty minutes doing paperwork and I was on the road by 11:00am. It's an '88 Targa GR with black leather interior. With no AC and no radio you really get to know the sounds your engine makes quickly. By the time I arrived in St Louis I had to stop and get a hand held cd player to pass the time. I arriving in Dallas at my sisters house around 2:00am and made the short drive into Austin today. The car ran amazingly well. I guess I expected to have all kinds of issues but the car just performed like it was new. It pulls hard in every gear. Didn't burn very much oil and really just wanted to keep going.

Now for a couple of things that need to be addressed so please chime in I need advice:

1. The Druck Press guage is constantly at a hair under 5. Even if the car is off and the power is on. If the power off it goes to 0.

2. The speedo is reading ~ 2x the actual speed. The OD and Trip are acurate and I made sure to test often on the 1100 mile journey. Any thoughts???

3. I tried the AC and it blows, just not cold air. I poped the engine lid and noticed some black gunk in the area of the compressor. Is it shot? Is it time to look at upgrading to the on in this months Excellence?

I'll post pictures when I get her cleaned up.

-Kerry

Your a/c system could be a little low on freon or whatever the PO used before. Check out this thread on oil underneath the hood

Usually, your oil pressure should read equal to or a bar above your rpms. Looks like your sending unit doesnt work and that should be replaced asap.

I've heard of speedos running fast, but usually it's about 6mph, no double! No idea what to tell you about that.

Sounds like a great car, hope you're happy with her! Oh, update your signature and put your year and model so peeps know what you're talking about next time you post

good luck, have fun!

Sounds like a cool car, but I'm with Adam, where are the pics. Or are you just teasing us?
2X the speed? Even non-stock tires wouldn't make that much of a difference. Mine's fast, but like Matt said. Only by about 6mph.

Congratulations. You must have consummate taste, considering your selection of a guards red Targa. We laugh--ha ha!--at those who dwell in the darkness of coupes. Pics?

The oil pressure issue is likely your oil pressure sender. It's a $70 part from Pelican, but you need a special wrench to replace it; essentially a ground-down crow's foot to get under the thing.

If you have gunk on the back of your compressor, it's probably leaking and shot.

My speedo was off by about 20% when I got my Carrera. My odometer and trip meter were dead on though. I took it out and sent it to North Hollywood Speedometer for a calibration. Four days later I had it back in the car and it is now dead on. Best $100 I've spent on the car so far.

Could it be that somehow your speedo speed is shown in kilometer per hour? If so, that would mean that at 60 mph your speedo would show 100.

Where is the oil pressure sending unit located? Anyone have a pic? Is there any instructions in the 101 projects book for replacing it? I ordered the book yesterday. As for the speedo I don't think it's reading kph, at highway speed it is reading ~140mph which I am guessing is actually 70mph.

Connect your oil pressure sender unit to a compressed air line with the key on. Using a regulator you should be able to confirm whether or not it works before you buy a new one.

ok I will post some pics tomorrow I can take a hint.

On another note I did some testing today with a friend and it seems the speedo is infact reading in kph. That means I was cruising pretty fast on the way home. What could this be??? Why would it be reading kph on a mph speedo???

Maybe you have a euro car or the speedo was changed with one from a euro car.
