DTM style mono wiper system
 

In all seriousness, when you're done laughing.....how come none of the aftremarket companies are making a single wiper system for the 911 a la DTM German touring car style. Anybody seen a 911 with this done?

Well, you could just remove one of the arms. Otherwise, it may be because our windshield is so short that one wiper wouldn't get enough of the windshield clean.

Maybe you could retrofit a late 70's to mid 80's VW Scirocco wiper mechanism...

The early Scirocco wiper mechanism is nothing special. That windscreen just so happens to have the right aspect ratio to allow a single pivot and still achieve the required % of windscreen area sweeped by just a single wiper.

If you were to remove the passenger side wiper, on a 911, the required % of windscreen area sweeped would not be met. (though some drivers find this acceptable, from what I've seen)

Some race cars that I have seen are using a 944 rear wiper motor and fitting them to the front of the 911. However I have never seen how these motors are suspended up underneath the windshield cowling. The non oem motors being used in Germany on othe race cars, have adjustable sweep % areas. Very neat actually, because you don't have to guess where the park is, and don't have to guess what angle to attach the wiper arm too. These versions simply have you affix the wiper blade and set the motor pin to a premarked and premachined slot - each marked with a % of sweep area. I will post som epics of what I find out.

RPMClassic, I don't think that is what island meant by sweep area.

He means that due to the shape/size of the windshield too much of the windshield would be left dirty with a single wiper. Modern cars generally have a much longer windshield partly due to a sharper angle which makes them better candidates for a single wiper to get the whole thing.

The swept area is a an function of wiper blade lenght, which is limited by the height of the windshield. There's some cool math we could do with the areas between the top and bottom arc, yada yada yada.

One solution would be to adapt a wiper mechanism from an old flat windshield semi or school bus; these had an articulated assembly so the bottom arc was the same as the top arc, and thus had a greater swept area.

Some Mercedes cars had/have that sort of articulated one wiper arrangement don't they?

The M-B wiper arm, first seen on the 300E in about 1985 or so, was not actually articulated, at least not in the parallelogram sense of the Bus arms, etc. It had (still has) an arm that is spring loaded to ride on a cam lobe, pushing out - in - out as went from side to top to side. It works.
