Raced with cop this morning

Just turning onto the street this morning, a car was fast approaching behind, I floored the gas paddle, the car changed to the left lane and try to pass me. It can't. Come to an interection, the car changed to behind my car, light up the red light, it's a unmarked blue police car. The two cops pulled me over. Stepped out their car, asked me nicely "why I cut them off and try to race with them?" I apologized. They let me go and said " put on your seat belt". I wish I was driving a Civic. I would not have floor the gas paddle. Too much power is a dangerous thing. When I floored the gas paddle, it was the tunnel vision(reminds me of driving a 930 turbo), I just look ahead w/out noticing it's a police car. Lucky me today. My fault.

Count your lucky stars Caliber--It does help to be an adult and to be polite when confronted by the police.

Boy, I'll say Caliber. I flashed a guy three times and the idiot pulled in front of me anyway. I can't stand it when people cannot put approach speed and their feasible, legal permitted speed together and make a good decision.

That's the advantage of my "other" Porsche.

I can stand on the throttle of the NARP 944, and nobody knows it. That's what it takes to keep up with traffic.

I hit water coming out of a driveway and the back tires broke loose. I saw a set of lights bearing down on me fast so when I hooked up I rowed the box through 3rd gear but the lights kept getting closer. The stoplight ahead turned red so I switched lanes and stopped. The lights switched lanes and stopped behind me ... it was a cop. He pulled me over and gave me a ticket for exhibition of speed (spinning the tires) and speeding (61 in a 35). The whole incident took place in less than 2/10 of a mile - from burnout to stoplight.

I asked the cop to show me the radar gun and he said he "estimated" my speed. I asked him how he could do that when I was accelerating and then decelerating in such a short distance. He had no answer other than that I had to "stop quickly to make the red light." I told him quickly was a subjective term ... one cop agreed with me, the other cop gave a ticket. Good cop/bad cop.

Cost me a day in court, a point on my license, increaed insurance rates, and $93.00 in fines - the exhibition of speed was dropped in favor of a guilty plea on the speeding.

caliber60 and Mr9146,

You are not alone. Years ago and late at night (and on a first date), I'm in my '70 Barracuda. Lights approach quickly from behind on a straight, flat two lane. I look at the lights in the rearview and "confirm" its not a cop car, and as he starts to swing wide and left, I nail it. Holley sucking and turn-down exhaust growling, I see out of the corner of my eye that he's getting even, and now dropping back a little - I think "she's impressed and I've got him." Of course nethier was true. I take a quick look over to see who I am beating and see "TO SERVE AND PROTECT"!!! So, I hit the brakes and he goes by. I pull over immediately but he just hits the brake lights twice to tell me I'm lucky and keeps going.

(Yes I know how dumb that was and yes I do save it for the track now.)

In most states, cops are required to use their lights if they exceed the speed limit.

You mihgt try saying, I ddn't know you were a police officer -- I thought you were some meth addled druggie and I was trying to stay away from you.

Regardless, I never race anyone.

I once blew by a police car like they were standing still. I even flashed them 3 or 4 times to make sure they had seen me coming. The speed difference was about 60 mph. I was in my Cup car...

My wife had a cop pull up behind her in the HOV lane here in Houston. The lane is separate from the other traffic and there's not much room for passing. The cop flashed his lights at her so she slowed down, then he flashed them faster so she speed up. At about 90mph he waved at her like that's enough. The two happily cruised along for the next few miles at 90.

"In most states, cops are required to use their lights if they exceed the speed limit. "

I guess Florida is not one of them!

Cops regularly run at 80+mph on the turnpike/I-95 without their lights flashing then tailgate anyone in the outside lane at a distance of less than a cars length until they pull over. In my opinion in an attempt to push the driver to increase speed.

Cops in the US are the worst drivers I have seen anywhere in the world- including the French and Italians!

Except for "hot pursuit" I've never seen a cop speeding with his/her lights on and I've frequented all 48 contiguous.

Funniest thing I ever saw was travelling on the interstate one day. I was in a bunch of traffic going way too slow because there was a CHP in with the group. I'm talking going 55 in a three lane expressway were speeds regularly exceed 70 mph. This guy in a Mustang comes flying up behind us (not seeing the CHP in our midst) doing at least 80. As he passes us he looks over and sees the CHP. Lights up all 4 wheels in a panic brake. He bever actually passed the cop and the CHP didn't do a thing. I figure the CHP estmimated that 5 pounds of crap in the drivers pants was equal to 1 ticket.

Ill play the devils advocate..... you turned onto the road and a car was fast approaching...

The car fast approaching has the right of way

The approaching car swerves to AVOID YOU

Then you try to outrun a car that was obviously going faster than you.

Basic driving etiquette (and rules of the road) has been ignored in this instance....this applies to racetracks and even public roads.

Be safe and drive well.. If you want to drive fast.... there are lots of car clubs that rent tracks for that purpose.

Id rather be driving on another stretch of road than the road you drive on

I guess it depends on which job. I live in Oregon. A sheriff in my martial arts class told me it was ok to cross any street as ong as the angle was close to 90o -- wrong. In Oregon, you can only do it at alleys and cross streets and only if the city has not prohibited it. Pays to read the statutes....

Come on Kurt...you know it is only unsafe if the children are pushing the old lady's wheel chair in the crosswalk!
