I was wondering if anybody on the board has a Special ordered 911 ?
And in the same question what were the options available? :)

My '86 was special ordered.

Things the original owner checked off on the order sheet (per the window sticker) include: special leather interior, short shifter, 16" wheels, limited slip, spoilers, and sport shocks. These are in addition to the factory "options" of "wheel with raised hub", Monterey digital radio, power door locks, cruise, and power sunroof.

Base of $33,975 + options totaling $7,029 + $245 prep + $578 delivery = $41,827.

I know of a 84 that was ordered with 7 & 8 x 16's is that what your 16's are?

Just curious, but how do you know if a car was special ordered or not? My '84 has $6500 worth of options. Best I can tell it has every factory option that was available except limited slip.

Good question. I only believe my car was special ordered since the original owner tells me it was... I have no proof, though. Could be BS.

The 16"-ers were originally 6" and 7". I have the 7" up front and 9" off a Turbo on the rear.

Hate to be the bubble-burster here, but your car was not "special ordered"(?), it was merely ordered. As was every 911 ever made, including all new ones today. The sales manager or person who orders the cars at the dealer gets to "spec out" each and every car they get, with as many or few options as desired.

When I sold them in 1986, my dealer ordered 99% of them w/ what I would call "the best seller package", ie. 16" Fuchs, sunroof, partial leather, (which was standard), and in the most popular (common) colors of red, black, or white. These could be dealer traded for any less common color if needed, but not the other way around. This is how a smart sales manager could have virtually "every color in stock".

I think that the sunroof, fuchs, power locks, radio, and a couple of other things were "standard options" in '86, in other words every car destined for the U.S. had them. Your car, Lucky, was a heavily optioned car w/ a higher than average sticker price, and it could have been spec-ed out or ordered for an individual customer, hence "special ordered", but could have just been ordered that way by a sales manager. Either way, who cares? It sounds like a nice car! :cool:

Just kidding... I don't care one way or the other if my car was special ordered. However, it does seem plausible given some of the extra options.

Porsches appear to be bought either on impulse or patiently by an enthusiast that is willing to wait many months to get a car equiped exactly how he/she wants it. It would be interesting to know what percentage of cars are ordered for the patient enthusiast -- I would guess it is a pretty high percentage.

I don't know what special ordered or just ordered means, but I was told my car was special ordered or whatever. It has a metallic copper paint that I don't believe was a stock choice, it (had) a full leather interior and an upgraded suspension package, that I believe means shocks.
The reason I believe it was special ordered is because there is a weird VIN #. I was told the odd digit was because of a custom order.

By special I was refering to a car that a customer ordered to his spec's, And not just buying what was on the lot.

My 73"S" was a very special car with sunroof, a/c, power windows, 100 litre gas tank, front loop oil cooler, full leather with sport seats, rear speaker enclosure, H1's from the dealer, green tinted glass, LSD, and space saver spare to accomodate the larger tank.

Not sure if I missed something but I am sure I did, but this was a very special order car.

I was told my 1987 Cabriolet was special ordered with Diamond Blue Paint and Full Marine Blue Leather. Does that count? When does it become special? It's special to me!

My 78 930 was ordered with no sunroof - ie delete option - presumably for a tallish first owner. Bit lighter too. I haven't ever seen another non sunroof 930

when checking out the option code sticker on a (highly optioned) 993 convertible for a friend, one of the codes was 09991; which seemed strange to me as most all other options are 3 digit numbers. after a bit of research, it was determined 09991 was "manufacture from the exclusive-programme"
that explained why a car with a lot of luxury options also had a euro RS short-shift linkage!!
I am not sure when Porsche used this code on the option sticker. does anyone else have it??

My 84 was orderd with a heated front windshield, noit sure how special that was but pricey at $800 and $1200 to replace...3 times :mad:

OK, alll children are special, some are just more special than others. Like Marc's '73. My point, (not very well made), was that all 911s are individually ordered to spec, some by sales managers and some for an individual customer. As opposed to say, Nissan Altimas, which just arrive on the carrier in whatever colors they decided to send the dealer that week.

I can't provide exact #s, but I believe that a pretty significant % of new 911s over the years were ordered for individual customers. This always a dicey deal for the dealer if it is an unusual car, (say, hot pink paint-to-sample), since in CA. deposits are generally always refundable by law if customer does not take delivery for some reason. Ordering a car like Marc's for a customer, (Silver 911S coupe w/ black leather and every desirable option in the book), was not a huge risk. Someone would want it regardless, and with no 6 month wait? It would have been worth a fortune on the showroom floor!

Actually, once Porsche made the "special wishes" dept. at Weissach available to U.S. customers, ('87?), cars truly could be "special ordered" with absolutely anything that one was willing to pay for. But that's a different subject than the cars that we are discussing here. :cool:
