Porsche Crest Is one nut enough?

Probably not what you were thinking, but I recently installed a new clutch cable, but it seems a bit shorter than the stock one I removed. I started at the clevis end and threaded it to the end of the clevis (i.e. the front of the car), but when I threaded the nut on the end (trans arm) it was just barely long enough to use one nut. I don't have a locking nut behind it. As a matter of fact, there's not even enough length to install a nylon locking nut. I just have a normal nut. But, don't panic, I've a/x'ed with it like this and checked it many times and it hasn't moved at.

My clutch and pedal are adjusted correctly. I have to do some work in the area soon (I have a squeak when I press the clutch in. I think it's the new helper spring on the cluster. VERY anoying) so I was thinking about backing it out of the clevis enough to thread a locking nut on the other end.

My questions.
1. Anybody else experienced this?
2. Is it safe to back it out of the clevis. I don't understand the idea of two nuts at one end, but nothing preventing it from backing out of the clevis at the other end! It has that other nut, but it can back out right with the cable???
3. Or was I supposed to use lock-tight on the clevis end? Anybody done that?

I have two nuts together at the tranny end of my clutch cable, just outside the bracket. Mine drift over time (6-12 months). Grinding reverse and 1st is usually a sign for me to crawl under and tighten a few turns and the grinding stops. There must be a better way.

Guys,

My '73 came with a jam nut at the clevis end, and a Nyloc nut at the clutch arm end. My guess is that someone lost the Nyloc nut (or damaged it) and had to resort to two nuts ala VW/356 clutch cables ... since the M7 x 1.00 fine thread Nyloc nuts are either NLA or extremely difficult to find.

I think blue Loctite on a single nut would be just fine.

Yea, mine has the jam nut on the clevis end too, but if you think about it, if the cable were to back out, the jam nut does no good because it would spin in the same direction. I would however stop the cable from going INTO the clevis any further. Not sure what good that would do?

Anway, I'm going to back it out of the clevis and run some Loctite, I guess. That way I can get two nuts on the tranny end, or at least a nylon locking nut. Man, I hate working in the crampted area! That's why I didn't go back and fix it right after I hooked it up. Oh well.
